COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Local Option Morning Wood: Local Option Morning Wood is an oak-aged coffee ale developed and brewed by Local Option Bierwerker. Fresh American oak used during the aging process and Dark Matter’s El Salvador San Jose pulp-natural coffee aromatically drive the beer; while remaining subtle components of the beers’ complete flavor profile. The amber colored, medium-bodied, and extraordinarily well-balanced ale was first unveiled at the Festival of Wood and Barrel Aged Beers in November 2011. Morning Wood’s taste is delicate and should be appreciated by beer drinkers of all palates.

Pours a cloudy amber with a smaller khaki head that leaves some spotty lace. Nose involves dried fruit notes, cocoa, and roasted coffee beans, fairly deep with complexity. Pretty sweet, fairly bitter. Medium bodied, somewhat oily, medium carb, creamy, with a lengthy chocolate and coffee tinged finish. Pretty decent brew, a mixed bag of sorts. The coffee takes over after a while, which isn’t so bad.

Bottle. Pours amber with a small creamy head. Aroma is roasted malts with nuts, as well as fruity and sweet notes of berries, coffee and kandi. Medium body with no carbonation. Flavour is sweet with nuts, kandi and fruity notes, and with a nutty, earthy finish.

500 ml bottle from Premier Gourmet. Pours a cloudy amber colour with lasting cream-coloured head and lots of floaties. Aroma is fresh coffee beans, biscuit, caramel and light oakiness. Flavour is very much coffee-forward with gently toasty biscuit, sweet caramel and some light vanilla and oak. Fine carbonation. Neat one.

Ruby red, quite hazy, big beige head. Smell of coffee, oak, grain, some dark fruits and malts. Moderate sweet, dark fruits, caramel, some malts, more coffee and some tannins. Moderate bitter finish. A very strange beer. Good malt base and hops, but not really sure about that coffee added

Pours a hazy light brown with a long-lasting white head. Aroma is sweet caramel, coffee, and chocolate. Flavor is an incredible blend of caramel, vanilla, coffee, chocolate, oak, and malts. Tastes and feels more like a stout than an amber ale. Delicious.

500ml bottle - Hop City in Birmingham, Alabama.

Appearance: Pours out an amber-hued body, lightly hazed, with a smallish, sustained, ivory-hued head.

Smell: Niiice. The satiating coffee bean scent is forward, followed by the American oak, the caramel (presumably American as well), toasted malts, teensy hint of vanilla, and subtle, restrained hop notes of floral and citrus.

Taste: A ladle of sweet caramel leisurely drizzled over toasted bread crusts and biscuit tops, then, a big sip of roasty coffee. Citrus backed with minute amounts of florals and green herbs. A little tangy cherry emerges upon warmth. Moderate bitterness. Bittersweet, caramel-coffee on the finish with some lingering oakiness.

Mouthfeel: Medium-plus body. Medium carbonation.

Overall: Enjoyed it! Tasty, with good oak accents, and, I know I say it every time, but, I do enjoy the use of coffee in non-stout beers.

From my limited samples, I have found coffee does quite well in ambers. It seems to shine there more so than it does in stouts. This particular coffee amber pours a hazed red orange color w/ small but long-lasting head of fine bubbles. This is very much a coffee-centric brew and it works because the coffee flavor is so nice: smooth, roasty and chocolaty. It works really well for a coffee beverage served cold. The downside of this is there is not much beer character aside from a bit of malty sweetness but, hey, this is a tasty beverage regardless. The texture is medium bodied and fine carbonation lends a nice creaminess. Looking through the other ratings, it seems to me there must be a bad batch in there somewhere. Some of these ratings are way out of line from what I’m tasting here.

Pure stale coffee aroma. Tastes of stale coffee. Some butter. Very one dimensional beer. Just coffee and butter. It’s the evening - I wanted beer, not breakfast.
