COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Schmetterling Gose is a modern interpretation of an ancient top fermented saline sour ale native to Saxony. Local Option Bierwerker took the task of reviving this unique style that disappeared during the early part of the 20th century. True to its antecedent, Schmetterling Gose is brewed with equal parts malted wheat and barley; seasoned with black lava salt, coriander, and hops; and fermented with yeast and lactobacillus. Light bodied, highly carbonated, pale in color, with a subtle aroma of spice and citrus and a dry, crisp, refreshing finish, Schmetterling Gose is ideal in summer months but appreciable year round.

Aroma of salty wheat and nice citrus. Pours berlinner pale yellow. Taste is mellow wheat and slight brine. A tame Gose but an easy drink. Would get again.

Tap. Thin bubbly white head on a very hazy light golden orange. Wheaty, sweaty and a little funky in the aoma. Flavor is a bit sweet hay and slight saltiness, with light clove. Lighter slick body.

On tap at Apex, pours a clear yellow with a small white head. Aroma of German lager yeast, salty notes and biscuits. Flavour is moderately salty with biscuits and a bit of a tart quality. Lightly salty and lightly tart – decent gose.

UPDATED: MAR 2, 2013 Draft at AtG Louisville. Lemon and light wheat malt aroma. Cloudy yellow with small head. Lactic, lightly salty lemon and creamy wheat malt flavor. Excellent - not an easy style to find. This is the best I’ve had the pleasure to try. Definitely one to seek out.

Pours gold with a paperthin white head. Aroma of pineapple, lemons and malt. Taste is tart, slightly salty and fruity with just a touch of lacto. Light and drinkable. Not the best representation of the style but still really tasty.

On tap at the local option into a Hitachino Weizen ; this one pours medium golden with an average white head present, that retains on the average/poor side here, with some stick lacing. The nose is malted wheat, cracker, lemon. The flavor profile is at first mineral water, malted wheat, bread, salt, and then spice, with some lemon grass present. I found it lacking in the funk department, and lacking in the salt spicing as well. I found it boring. Give me a Bayerischer Bahnhof Original Leipziger Gose all day over this one

Tap at Local Option. The beer comes to me with a hazy, dim, dull yellow color and a small head. Aroma is strong on coriander and light lactic touches. Favor is great with coriander and good lactic flavor that ends in some light tart touches. I would like it to be just a little more sharp and crisp but otherwise great. Salt perception is very variable but I (high tolerance) and my lady (low tolerance) thought the salt character was mild. These guys make beer for me, everything fits my tastes.
