cask, special
Burns inspired smoked ale. An amber, sweet ale with a smokey flavour made from German and Czech hops
a reference to the brave horse in the poem Tam O’Shanter who helps a drunk Tam to escape a group of witches but has her tail pulled off in the process.

Cask at the Holyrood 9a. Pours copper, tastes a lot like sweet smoked sausage.

Tasted this in the Esquire House, Glasgow (JDW) on the 7th February 2014. Cask, handpump dispense. Dull opaque amber in colour with a thin white head. Strange toasted note of pine nuts in the long aroma. Thin but resiny mouthfeel and good lacing. Pale malt gives a digestive biscuit base with roast malt and quince fruit in the mouth. There is a slight hop presence in the aftertaste but this fades fast. Smoked malt strong in the finish, redolent with teak oil notes giving a strong phenolic flavour at the end. An interesting Smoked Ale but might be too pungent for some. Recommended though.

On keg at Holyrood 9A. Appearance - a lovely amber to red. A decent thin lacy head. Nose - distinct but restrained Islay whisky note. Biscuits and toffee in the background. Taste - slightly overpowering smoking peat. Still toffee and sone sweetness in the background. Palate - medium bodied with a tangy texture and a finish that is interesting but that doesn’t completely refresh. Overall - needs more malt structure to take on the smoke.

Mahogany brown, clear body with evaporating off tan head. Five spice tart nose. Enveloping oven baked fruity initial taste. Colourful midrange with a welcoming malt burn and a fresh lemony linger. Emancipation of the dark malt rolled fruit tang without a major hop presence and matching coppery bitterness was surprising. Worth a sup.

Cask @ The Society Room JDW. Reddish brown colour, not much head. Fruity malt aroma. Sour caramel malt flavour. Bitter aftertaste. Not good.

Cask by handpump at Society Room, Glasgow - clear deep amber brown, bubbly off-white head, no detectable aroma, berry fruit and resin flavour, initial sweetness then sour aftertaste
