3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Clear very low carb orange. Caramel, oak, alcohol and some vineous notes in aroma. Sweet caramel, mild oak, some chocolate notes too. Touch of spice. Almost a little salty, but that could of been the salmon i’d eaten earlier. Warming and tasty.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Hazy deep copper color with no head. Sweet honey with some toasted grain aromas. Syrupy thick malt body with some orange and fig tastes. Littel bitter though a light dry-ish tinge. Some stale, cardboard qualities. Alcohol is very present and warms the throat after the swallow. Overall a powerful beer but some unfavorable qualities.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Nice dark orange color with a fast diminishing head on top. Visible super fizzy carbonation. Nose a mixture of hops, wet cork, intense alcohol and traces of vanilla and unfortunatly a slightly sulphury note. First sipe a huge, overwhelming alcohol taste. Warms your throat. Sweet candy sugar and celery comes through somewhere in the middle - hoppy too - but the alcohol ruins it for me.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: SEP 14, 2005 Allegedly brewed according to an old Russian porter recipe, with kvas/kwas as one of the ingredients! Brewed by Brauerei Locher "im Auftrag der BALIK Räucherei im Toggenberg AG", website www.balik.com . The Räucherei had even supplied the smoked salmon I had with this beer (330 ml bottle) at the Seafood Bar at Stansted Airport, London (Norwegian salmon, smoked in Switzerland, sold in England, eaten by a Norwegian - a well-traveled fish!) According to the BALIK website the beer should be served cool at 12 degrees C, but I had it served fridge cold. While the coldness must have taken away some of the flavour details, it probably made the beer more drinkable with seafood, taking the edge off the heavy sweetness. The beer has a brown colour with a slight haziness, low head. Aroma and flavour are more like a port wine than a "normal" beer. Very sweet, warming mouthfeel (no surprise at 11% ABV!), spicy, a bit alcoholic, but interesting. Decent hops in the finish.

2.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 9/20
A hazy amber beer with a huge orange head. The aroma is primarily of alcohol, but is also spicy and has notes of oranges. The flavor is very sweet with a dry alcoholic end, where the alcohol burns a little. Somehow the body is thin - weird for such a strong beer.

This brew is courtesy of Footbalm.Nice amber color, small white head that faded quickly leaving little behind.Mild malty aroma some caramel and little else coming through in fact it comes off as pretty run of the mill right away. The flavor was better then i was expecting though.Nice smooth malty flavor a little caramel perhaps and the alcohol makes a slight jump at you in the middle but tames itself towards the end. Not nearly as good as the Barley Johns Dark Knight but still a decent enough brew to have again some time. Thanks again Bud for the brew.
