The American boutique breweries have developed a unique style of IPA with a deeper colour and assertive bitterness. ’In Yer Face’ is brewed in this style; a huge mouthful of toasted malt, fruit, flowers and spice, with a real kick!

[cask at the Bow Bar, Edinburgh] Deep orangey bronze with a large white head. Aroma of sweet fruit, honey and caramel. On the taste, it’s extremely sweet and very viscous - but not that hoppy. There’s some grapefruit, but it’s mostly cloying sugar syrup that I get, unfortunately [11092012]

On keg at The Stockbridge Tap. Pours a dark amber colour with a fair beige head. Aroma of pine, passion fruit, caramel, yeast and alcohol. Similar flavours with mild carbonation and an oily mouth-feel. Nicely bitter with lingering pine and pineapple again.

Cask @ Back of Beyond. Slightly hazy amber. Initially quite bitter, some orange citrus, bitter finish. Pretty good, but one is enough.

Cask at the Hope Tap (JDW), Reading. Golden amber with a flat, tight, cream head; earthy malt aroma with some light hops; medium bodied, with some sweet caramel malts to start, soon outshadowed by some assertive hops, not exactly in your face but making their presence felt. Unfortunately the finish is rather short, leaving some light hops and caramel malts to linger. Talk to the hand, cos’ the face ain’t listening.

Cask at The Market Porter, London. Mostly malts. Very sweet, notes of cake and bread. Very little hop presence. Easy to drink with a subtle kick, though not a hop kick, and certainly not in my face.
