3.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 mmather (122) - Colorado, USA - APR 15, 2008
From a 500ml flip top. This beer poured nice and caramel colored, with beautiful banana and clove aromas and a wonderful smooth head. What I love about dunkel weizens is the hint of caramel that the good ones add to the typical banana/clove esters and the smooth wheat mouthfeel and this one does not disappoint. Being in the US, perhaps I am deprived, but this is simply one of the best dunkel weizens I have had the privilege of consuming.

Huge dirty beige slowly collapsing head over fully hazy (swingtop closing badly) mossy-brown beer. Wood, bananaester & solvent, warm light-roasted malts. Hints at lactic acid & rotting citrusfruit. Sweet, bready, again woody notes in the taste. Citruspeel, if discreet, and a slight wry-ish spicy finish. More banana, restrained wheat but no real acidity. Medium bodied at best, well-carbonated MF, but a bit thinnish in the finish. Oh, how memory and changes in flavourperception play strange tricks upon us. This very beer drew me, near 20 years ago into German Weizens, especially Dunkels , and made me drive miles out of the way, to get it on our festival. Now it is just another Dunkelweizen - neither really boring, neither really exceptional.
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 MoritzF (7756) - Bochum, GERMANY - SEP 25, 2007
(swing top bottle) Cloudy, amber colour with a huge and persistent off-white foamy head. Sweet and sourish, almost tart fruity (citrus, green banana) aroma, slightly yeasty with a moderate wheat-character, slightly toasted on a clovy background. Sour-sweet flavour, light bodied with a lively carbonation. Toasty, moderately wheaty taste with citrus-fruity accents; light-sweet, sourish, slightly tart finish with light but rounded notes of caramel in the aftertaste. Works for me.
3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 RedHaze (371) - Where the hell am I?, Nebraska, USA - JUN 30, 2007
500ml swing top bottle, best before 15 10 07. Purchased in Spangdalem, Germany.
Pours a very dark chestnut brown with frothy three finger head that takes a very long time to settle a thick quarter inch layer of foam. The head leasves behind a tattered webbing of lace.
Smell; nice solid wheat aroma, with a little cloves and bananas and just a hint of bubblegum. There’s also a slightly sweet caramel malt backbone to this.
Taste; the flavor pretty much falls in-line with the aroma with wheat malt, bananas a bit of cloves and a touch of bubblegum. And there’s a little bit of a sweetness from the caramel malts in the finish. Overall pretty nice.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied with a nice smooth/creamy natural carbonation. This isn’t what I might consider a truly outstanding Dunkel Weizen, but it has a nice flavor profile, and is pretty darn drinkable with a fairly low abv. I would have no problem sitting down with a few bottles of this with friends and a deck of cards for the night.
3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 MrRomero (1966) - Nolanville, Texas, USA - MAY 23, 2007
500 ml flip top bottle: poured into my weizen glass, this beer cascaded upwards but not out of the glass. What first struck me was the color. Kind of a muddy orange with a bit of brown. Full thick light beige head. Not the darker brown dunkelweizens I am used to drinking. Light roasty aroma which is nice with just a hint of banana. The slight roastiness in this distinguishes it from the Hell but not by much. Still a lightly flavored weizen and there are much better ones on the market to compete for your hard earned dollar/Euro.

2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 Geiserich (2559) - Vienna, AUSTRIA - APR 18, 2006
Bottled:
Hazy, muddy brwon color, huge, off white foamy head. Light sourly aorma, few fruit notes. Flavor is not very rich, few fruity or maltiness. Quite light bodied. Dry, astringent finish. Nice drinkable, refreshing, but not more.
2.3 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20 Papsoe (25131) - Frederiksberg, DENMARK - NOV 13, 2005
(Bottle 50 cl) Orangey brown beer with a slight haze - the yeast remains as a lumpy sediment at the bottom. Tall, but collapsing head. Unfortunately not very rich in either aroma or flavours - no real fruit or maltiness. Not bad - just disappointingly bland. 221102
