I had the single components of Black Dawn III. Single origin versions from El Salvador and Peru. They were both very chocolatey with the Peruvian incarnation being fractionally less so. Both were full of big coffee presence and a light acidity. The coffee really is strong, and drinkable. Intense but not too complex. They come across like a fizzy, black iced coffee with a looooooong roast bitterness. The Peruvian had a touch more creaminess and higher acid than the other.

Moderate cocoa, roasted coffee beans and oak wood on the nose. Pure black in color with no foam but nice lacing. Impressively light bodied for an imperial stout. Nicely balanced flavors of roasted coffee beans, molasses, pine, oats, and soft cocoa notes. Overall, this is a tasteful stout with a bit of an alcohol touch on the finish. Coffee and chocolate overtones. I’d give this a B rating.

Had this on tap at New Old Lompoc’s 5th Quadrant location. Colour... black as.... well.... coffee, with no head. Nose... oooooo boy! Certainly get the Sumatran coffee aroma, and a bit of milk chocolate, too. Palate... quick shot of freshly brewed coffee followed by some dark chocolate, Swiss mocha and Postum, with a medium length finish.

On draught at Belmont Station in Portland, served in a snifter. Pours inky black with a thick and foamy light tan head that recedes steadily. Stringy lacing on the glass. Strong coffee aroma with some roasted malt behind it. Full, smooth body with roasted coffee, dark malt and hops flavors. The finish is black coffee with a bit of dark chocolate as well. Coffee bitterness lingers a long time. Very enjoyable overall.

Tap @ their NW location... Poured black with a light brown/tan head. Smelt of a fresh pot of coffee. Tasted of coffee beans, mocha and malts. Easy drinking and well balanced. A light alcohol, Irish cream-like flavor.
