bottle... brought this to our bad beer tasting expecting the worse but was pleasantly surprised, mostly super malty and tough to find any oak but good enough to try

A: The beer pours a dark amber with a fair amount of haze to it with a tan head. S: There is a surprising amount of chocolate on the nose which really seems like it is probably all oxidation, but itís good at this point in time. Heavy on the oak with some nice dark fruit and caramel aromas, perhaps some bourbon but definitely vanilla. T: Although the nose was really great, the flavor is not at all. It really just tastes like the oak, unfortunately. Thereís a bit of a citric flavor to it and perhaps some green apples. Bready malts and just a touch of toffee, as well as some astringency and tannins. M: The body is medium with the carbonation being on the low side of medium. D: I had my hopes high from smelling the beer, but the flavor fell way, way short. Too bad.

Nose of soft bourbon, green apple, vanilla, sweet darker fruity undertones. Pours dark brown with reddish hue and a thin beige ring. Bourbon, vanilla, light roast, soft smoke, caramel, brown sugar, soft green apple. Light dry sweetness and soft bourbon finish. Body thinned by barrel, but super solid beer.

Draft at Uber. Pours a dark root beer brown with small tight light tan head that settles to an off white ring. Nose is mostly light oaky vanilla, brown sugar, bourbon with estery apple and hints of tobacco. Barrel on the palet is very subtle. Light tobacco, caramel, apple, cola, vanilla, prune, touch of smoke and rasins. Love how light the barrel is on this, would had liked to have had a bit more body on the base beer but still enjoyable.

Bottle from Malt & Vine. Bottled on 30 Oct. 2009. Pours very dark brown with a slight beige/tan head. Strong nose of vanilla and oak. And raisin or prune. Maybe chocolate. Medium body with foamy carbonation. Flavor is chocolate, wood, dark fruit, vanilla. Itís both smooth and harsh. I think I taste bourbon. Very nice beer. Heat is a bit noticeable.

Sample at Belmont Station in Portland during a New Old Lompoc tasting. The beer is a murky dark brown color with a medium beige head that recedes steadily. Rings of lacing. Aroma of caramel malt, lemon rinds and bourbon. Rich body with a moderate amount of bourbon character, and flavors of dark fruit, caramel, malt and hops. Touches of lemony citrus here as well. The finish is oaky with a sweet caramel malt aftertaste. Pretty good overall.
