Bomber. Color is a shade of dark brown with a good inch of chocolate mocha foam. Aroma is milk chocolate, caramel, smoked malts and a little bit of floral hops in the background. Taste begins with a strong shot of light roast coffee, bittersweet chocolate, roast malt and brown sugar. Also some citrus and herbal hops notes at the end. Mouthfeel is mildly creamy with average carbonation and a dry, smoky finish with some hops bitterness. Overall, an enjoyable ASA that tastes a bit like a strong Stout with a hops kick.

22 oz. from Chuck’s. Great dark malty brew. Slight touches of porter. Smells like chai and chocolate. Finishes like an imperial stout. This beer is great!

Massive chocolate and malt aroma. Beautiful. Pours a hazy brown with garnet all around. Khaki head slowly ebbs. Medium-thin mouthfeel up front leads to a full more-rounded finish. Slight cola but otherwise a nice toffee, roasted and smooted taste. Chocolate blends with some coffee.

A caramel woodiness starts with a faint dark chocolate note. Deep mahogany with creamy beige head. A complex sweet flavor, traces of brown sugar and leather. Medium body but delicate carbonation. Trace amounts of smoke make for an interesting and enjoyable beer.

Pour is a deep brown color with ruby highlights. A small off white head is present, too. Aroma is chocolate, shitty coffee, and slight fruitiness from faded hops. Taste follows with chocolate, a nice roastiness, and a slight bitterness in the finish. Slightly thin bodied. Very stout-like beer. Wish I would have tried this fresh, but for having never heard anything about lompoc I was pleasantly surprised with how good this offering was.

28-Apr-10 (22-oz bottle: Purchased 30-Dec-09 for $4.24 at www.liquidsolutions.net) "Special Draft" doesn’t sound all that impressive, but this is a very flavorful and enjoyable beer. Medium-brown in color with slight haze and several chunkies settling out quickly, the beer pours half an inch of tan-colored head that settles to a wide ring fairly quickly, leaving a few spots of lace. Aromas of roast, earth, chocolate, dark toast, beer jerky, and a touch of grassy hops are somewhat mirrored on the palate by flavors of burnt toast, dark-roasted malt, charred wood, and medium-bitter, grassy hops, but the slight ashiness in the finish seems a little harsh after awhile. Medium in body, fairly dry, moderately carbonated. A really pleasant surprise.

For some reason the brewer calls this Lompoc Special Draft instead of Strong Draft on the bottle. This poured a very rich dark ruby-brown color with a big tan head with huge bubbles. Nose of roasted caramel malts and some floral hops. Body is rich and heavy and the mouthfeel is creaml and smooth. The flavor is on the malty side with some ripe fruit and hops. This is very easy drinking.

Tap @ Taphouse Grill. Opaque dark brown pour with a tan head and moderate lace. Start is slick and almost the right weight, but it lightens up quickly. Complex aroma of bitter chocolate, dates, licorice and hints of coffee, cherry and clove. Finish is fairly short and dry, with a slight milky sweetness. Body is only medium weight: a bit heavier and some slickness or oiliness in the mouth would make this ale outstanding. As it stands, it’s very good.
