The Hackney Hopster is a debonair young chap of a pacific pale ale. Dressed in Motueka and Nelson Sauvin hops from New Zealand, the Hopster shows off flavours of grapefruit, lemon zest and gooseberry. With a dry and fresh finish, you may find yourself wanting to hang out with this beer more often.

Medium white lasting head. Slightly hazy amber body. Funky earthy barnyard aroma with salty notes. Dryish earthy funky lemongrass taste with spicy notes. Mid-bodied. Mild, mealy mouthfeel. Dryish resiny funky cow dung aftertaste with spicy lemony fruity notes. It’s not bad, but too much cow dung for my tastes. (0.237l draft at Truscott Arms, London.)

Bottle - BBE Apr 2014; Drank Jan 2014 - BCA; yeasty sediment - Hazy Amber Gold in colour. Fruity; grapefruit and tangerine citrus and a hint of gooseberry. Hoppy; grassy and floral hops. Malty; biscuity malts, caramel. Moderately bitter fruity citrus hoppy and quite dry throughout. Decent, particularly for relatively low ABV.

Cask at the brewery tap. Light amber, lasting head. Citrussy hop nose, some toffee, but very bitter overall. Enjoyable.

On tap at the Red Squirrel. Pours clear gold, thick white head. Aromas of grapefruit and pale malt - lots of pale malt for a ’hoppy’ beer. Taste has more malt, veyr light bitterness. Light to medium body, creamy texture, dry finish. Not bad, but not that hoppy.

On tap at the Red Squirrel. Appearance - ruby to orange with a decent head. A touch cloudy. Nose - toffee and some orange. Taste - pale malt plus a citrus finish probably grapefruit. Palate - medium bodied with a creamy texture and a long dry finish. Overall - well made if a bit underwhelming. The name had me expecting a bit more bitterness.

Impressively hazy rich golden, thin scuffed white head. Dusty melon, light grapefruit stuffed sock. Soft lemon, nice grassy edge to inititial taste. Swoop of light milky malt. Almost over moderate carbonation. Dulled dry finish, loud peppery linger.

Keg, Red Squirrel
