On tap at the brewery. Pours a decent pale amber, fairly clear, minimal white head. Aromas of a touch of stonefruit, mineral, and light crystal, some crackers, small hint of biscuit along with a very faint fruitiness. A very mild session ale, no particularly distinguishing characteristics. Yeast gives off some very light albeit generic fruity esthers. Slightly astringent and dry finish. Carbonation could and should be a bit lower to help ease the bite on the finish, also serving temp could be a bit warmer to help accentuate the biscuit character of the golden promise malt. Unfortunately there are no truly distinguishing characteristics of this ordinary bitter and it’s a shame because most of Black Raven’s beers are very good to excellent. Perhaps Maris Otter malt would provide a slightly richer backbone and nuttier flavour, although Golden Promise is Timothy Taylor’s base malt for Landlord ale it would seem that to reproduce their results one must use the Yorkshire Square yeast strain...which in this particular example does not seem likely or it may be the 1st generation yeast growth in this sample. One other distraction is that has a slight acidity in the mouthfeel and finish. One would assume that to create a Best Bitter that the water would need a sufficient amount of alkaline buffering in the form of CaCo3 and or gypsum.
