COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our India Pale Ale is straw/amber in color and is characterized with a higher level of alcohol and hops. More than two pounds of Galena, Willamette, Styrian Goldings, and Centennial hops per barrel will remind you every sip that this is an IPA. The result is a rich, intense beer with bitterness in perfect balance with residual malty sweetness.

Dark gold color with decent white head. Citrus, orange peel nose. Flavor is grapefruit, bitter with a touch of malt on the back end. Medium body with a little roasty malt that leads to the hoppy/bitter finish.

Bottle: Dull amber pour with a small beige head. Nose is more malty than expected, along with a (light) sweet citrus hopping. Taste is again, maltier than expected. Bready and then some dirty florals. Sort of dull...

650ml bomber pours a pale amber color with about 2 fingers of white head and some nice lacing. Aroma is light citrus and earthy hops with a hint of caramel. Taste is citrus and earthy hoppy bitterness with enough malty sweetness to produce a nicely balanced IPA. Medium body and carbonation provide a decent enough mouthfeel.

Taster at the brewpub. The lineup here is nice with well made to style beers. This is no exception and features a clear, dark orange pour with a metallic more west coast hop profile. Little bit of citrus and grapefruit in the aroma.

22. Pours a cloudy dark amber with a loose white head. Ample lace. Big piney caramel nose. Creamy medium body. Caramel, pine, and resin on the mid-palate, with a mild resiny finish. Pretty understated, and kind of closed out, but not bad.

Draft @ the Brewpub. Pours a slightly hazy amber color with a small off-white head. Has a fruity malty hoppy bitter grapefruit aroma. Sweetish malty hoppy bitter grapefruit flavor. Has a fruity malty hoppy bitter grapefruit finish.

Sampled from 32-oz plastic growler, supplied by Lone Peak brewer who visited Surly during Darkness Day 2009 in Brooklyn Center, MN. Pours a dark orange amber colored brew with an average sized off-white head that slowly dissipates to a thin ring. Aroma of citrus and grapefruit, a hint of caramel malt, and some mild spices. Taste is medium bodied, flavors of typical west coast IPA with a little more sweet caramel flavor. Finish is mildly bitter that even lingers after the finish. Special thanks to Lone Peak brewery for saving me a 1,100 mile round trip visit.

Dark caramel color with a small-ish white head. Citrus and grapefruit aromas. The flavor is fairly light on the hops, not the kick I like to see with my IPAs, and doesn’t really have an interesting complexity. Does have a noticeable sweet malt character and finishes with a nice bitter. It’s all right.

Draught. Orange-golden colour, citrus oil and tropical fruit aroma. Passionfruit and grapefruit hop character dominates, but there is a nice underlying cushion of sweet malt. Long bitter finish. Very nice.
