3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pint at the brewery. Pours slightly hazy orange with a white head. Hoppy aroma, but not like I would expect a double IPA to be. Piney, earthy, a little grapefruit. The body is kind of skimpy for the style. Flavors of tangerine, pine, grapefruit hit my palate. Pretty clean beer, good hop fix but not a deep or overly complex hop profile. Finishes slightly hot. Enjoyable beer, but I would reach for many other doubles in its stead.

4 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
On tap at brewery, poured clear amber w/ medium, creamy off-white head, some retention and good lacing. Huge aromas of citrus, floral, pine and resin hops, tropical fruity esters and cereal malt, best smelling IPA if had in years. Initial flavor is a light dry alcohol on the front and a heavy hops bitterness on the finish. Tastes are pine, grapefruit rind, malty cookie, and fruity esters. Medium to full bodied, smooth carbonation, alcohol mouthfeel and dry finish.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
December 28th, 2011 - Lone Tree Brewing’s serial tasting ended with their Hoptree Imperial IPA - a grand finale before I shuffled away back to the insipid suburbia outside. It was imperative that this last beer left a good taste in my mouth, and the Hoptree Imperial IPA was up on deck. The previous beers were middling, but Imperial IPAs are one of my favorite styles, and I tend not to be especially picky about how these flavor titans wobble or balance on the tongue. Lone Tree Brewing’s Hoptree’s aroma explains the naming convention. The aroma is intensely thick and sweet, and gives the drinker the sensation of huffing straight pine sap. The flavor draws more of that essence of pine into the readers skull, but with a sweetened and smoothed jam like quality and texture. The whole thing is intense, sweet, boozy, and will make the tips of your socks curl, but the balance and volume isn’t painful or unpleasant. Somewhere after a half dozen sips though I start suffering from sugar fatigue, and my palate is battered and bruised. This is one brew that’s definitely welcome in sampler glass sizes. It is also a better conclusion to Lone Tree’s sampler than many of the other beers would have been. While Lone Tree came out of the game with some drinkable beers, I look forward to seeing what they produce as their brewing acumen improves. You can tell there’s a certain enthusiasm for the craft in the air, tempered only by the challenges of opening a new brewery: unfamiliar territory, even for the most experienced home brewer.
