This malty, full-bodied double alt is also known as “Stickebier” – German slang for “secret brew”. Long Trail Double Bag was originally offered only in our brewery taproom as a special treat to our visitors. With an alcohol content of 7.2%, please indulge in moderation. The Long Trail Brewing Company is proud to have Double Bag named Malt Advocate’s “Beer of the Year” in 2001. Malt Advocate is a national magazine devoted to “expanding the boundaries of fine drinks”. Their panel of judges likes to keep things simple, and therefore of thousands of eligible competitors they award only two categories: “Imported” and “Domestic”. It is a great honor to receive this recognition.

12 oz bottle into a pint glass. A: Pours a clear copper color. The head is a one finger off-white shade, and while it’s relatively creamy looking, it doesn’t have the best retention. S: The malt is typically toffee-forward, but with that faint German touch to it. Namely, stone fruits and just a hint of diacetyl. There’s a hop profile that’s very mellow yet still noticeable. Not bad, not bad at all. T: Loads of toffee start this one off. The flavor even gets faintly nutty at times, with some nice apricot notes right after the swallow. There does seem to be a touch of alcohol flavor (along with a faint burn) on the finish. I have to say that overall, the flavor profile isn’t my cup of tea. M: It’s actually kind of coarse, and even slightly angular in feel. This helps to give it pretty good drinkability in spite of its maltiness. Carbonation is light, which somehow suits this one. O: This isn’t my (double) bag, as the scores reflect. Still, I don’t hate it. Decent to try if you’re looking for something different, but I wouldn’t recommend a full 6 pack.

Bottle. Pours a clear dark amber with a bubbly white head that fades. Aroma of oak, malt, hops, a hint of sweeter fruit. Taste has a lot of crisp yeasty malt, with an underlying sweetness and wood. Hides the alcohol. Lingering crispness that isn’t very big. Drinkable, not bad.

(Rating #6526)

12 oz bottle poured dark amber into a pint glass, with minimal white head. Aromas of berries and floral malt. Taste initially of a little booze then quickly turns to a roasted caramel with a smooth sweet aftertaste. Pretty solid beer, can have several of these in one sitting.

Pours a dark amber from a bottle, not much nose, although served rather cold so maybe just much wasn’t making it out of the glass. Flavor a nice caramel yeastiness, some banana/tropical fruit notes. Good beer.

Draught @ Waterfront Ale House. Slightly cloudy dark amber with small foamy beige head, faint caramel aroma, low carbonation, lightly bitter hoppy caramel taste, longish finish. Not too bitter and nice.

650ml bottle. Picked this local beer up while passing through Vermont. Pour yields good lacing, and a beer that has copper/caramel and amber hues. Persistent carbonation keeps thin ring around glass and offers up constant aromas of dried fruit, roasted nuts and melted brown sugar. On the palate, the malt shows through. Subtle sweetness gives way to slight bitterness. Initially a little boozy, but that too is easy to forgive given the 7.2%abv. Overall, a fine effort. Hope to try more from long Trail

Bottle. Aroma is sweet malts with floral contributions. Appearance is clear dark brown with nice sparkle, and decent head. Taste is moderately sweet with sugary maltiness and mild fruit and hint of alcohol. Palate is medium bodied with lively carbonation and nice sweet finish. Overall, a nice beer without a lot of complexity.
