Commercial Description:
Barley wine is a modern term used for a very strong ale of unusually high wine-like alcohol content. Dark brown with a vast shattering attack of malt, hints of raisin, vanilla and a bitter sweet chocolate finish, this well aged ale (12 months) is a great finish to any dining experience.

12 oz bottle shared by Enniskillen from CapFlu! Thanks Todd and Chris! Nose of caramel, raisins, a hint of molasses and chocolate. Cloudy very dark brown with a small light tan head. Flavor is smoke, raisins, molasses and a hint of bitterness. Finish lightly bitter and smoky. Alcohol completely covered. Excellent.

A dark reddish brown barleywine with a thin off white head. A nice caramel aroma, floral hops, vinous notes. In ,mouth, a rather light barley wine, a bit lactic, with nutty notes, a bit of chocolate, very roasted malt for a BW. Nice offering. Bottle from Capflu. Shared Aug. 2008, with Capflu, GRM, et al., Brasseurs du temps gathering.

Small yellow-beige head over practically opaque brownruby beer. Fruity, sourish, alcoholic & lightly salt-smoked nose; some chocolate initially; very complex, with earthy and fiery components. Tantalizing nose, even when the sourishness makes me a bit weary. Bitterish, wood, earthy, bitter chocolate, oakwood, discreet hops. This is really growing on me. Warming up, black cardemom, alcohol-drenched oakwood, more chocolate and a light milk trace. Well-bodied, very slick, slight alcoholwarming. Excellent, very complex and yet reasonably restrained BW. I quite didn’t catch how you came across this gem, joss, but thank you very much indeed!

Bottle courtesy of my brother: (11% on label) Pours a dark brown with a medium tight tan head. Nice sweet malty aroma. caramel and chocolate malt, some oak and raisin tones. Medium malt body. dark fruit , light clean bitterness in the finish. No noticable alc in the body which is impressive for 11%.

Bottle. Very dark brown with a red shine, creamy brown layer. Slightly oxidized cedarwood and light cherry aroma. Wood, strong tobacco notes - smothering everything else, berries, a bit vanilla. Roast and smoke aftertaste. Fairly lightbodied for the style. Flavors will likely mellow out with time, which only can help - the over the top cigar notes are a real killer. I imagine the body is only going to get lighter though.

Bubblegum, sherry, raisins and alcohol in the nose. Almost opaque, dark brown body with ruby highlights is topped by a low tan head that recedes to ring. Dark malt bitterness i up front but blends well with sherry, butterscotch and raisin flavours. Medium bitterness. Lingering dark malt character and some alcohol apparent especially in the finish. Medium full body would benefit from stronger carbonation. Sampled on cask at Dix Xmas Extreme Beer festival 2007.
