tiggmtl (4148), Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada Mar 26, 2008 Bubblegum, sherry, raisins and alcohol in the nose. Almost opaque, dark brown body with ruby highlights is topped by a low tan head that recedes to ring. Dark malt bitterness i up front but blends well with sherry, butterscotch and raisin flavours. Medium bitterness. Lingering dark malt character and some alcohol apparent especially in the finish. Medium full body would benefit from stronger carbonation. Sampled on cask at Dix Xmas Extreme Beer festival 2007.
CapFlu (3242), Victoria, British Columbia, Canada Dec 25, 2007 (Draught) Sampled at Dix X-mas Xtreme Caskival 2007. Pours headless, deep brown body. Nose is overly licorice, scotch malt and caramel. Flavour is wildly alcoholic and somewhat rubbery. Hooker (444), New Westminster, British Columbia, Canada Dec 11, 2005 Clear ruby colour with thick lasting tan head. Brown sugar and molassas nose. Sweet slightly spicy malt taste with lingering warming alcohol finish. Oakes (6779), Miami Beach, Florida, USA Dec 26, 2004 Served properly, in a snifter. Very dark brown colour. Fat malty aroma with alcohol, cherries, walnuts, bourbon, slight chocolate. Palate has rich malty depths. Full body is slightly oily with notes of plums, cherries, wood, tobacco and sherry. Finish is sweet, woody and capped off with an alcoholic dryness. Their best beer. A different type of barley wine, too, from what Americans are used to - this is not an assault but a BW of subtlety, definitely English in inspriration. Crit (2205), New Westminster, British Columbia, Canada Jul 2, 2004 Updated: Dec 13, 2005Coke color, beige head. Interesting dry malt nose. Huge full bodied malt flavor with mild alcohol heat.
Harley the brewmaster says this was rather young, so it should get even better in time
The above ratings now reflect the several samples I had at Winterfest 05 at Dix.
Easily the best beer at the fest.
Not meaning to take anything away, but there wasn’t much competition!!
