COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
As the name suggests this is a Dark Wheat Bier. Traditionally a German “Wheat Ale” this light bodied, crisp flavored cold Ale has become one of Vancouver Islands favorite brews. This beer has a refreshing graininess in the flavor profile with the addition of 35% White Wheat.

2011-08-17, draught at the brewpub, 5% ABV, 5-4-6-2-11=28
Dark brown color. Light smell of dirty water, some chocolate and some roasted malt. Mild roasted malt flavor, without wheat character; dusty roastiness, providing some bitterness too. Below par.

2010-03-26, draught at St. Augustine’s, Vancouver, 5.5% ABV, 5-4-6-2-11=28
Cloudy dark brown color, with creamy head. Very light caramel and banana aroma. Reasonable body strength; correct flavor of roasted malt and caramel, correct bitterness, with a drier feeling in the end; the final has roasted nuts too. Simple.

Bottle (mine says 5.0%). Dark brazil-nut brown. Lots of chocolate malt, a little roast, light acidic finish. Not one that I would put into the dunkelweizen category (waaay more dunkel than weizen), more like a porter or brown ale than anything. Still, it is a nice brew.

(Draught) Sampled at the brewery in a 6oz glass. Pours a lasting white foamy head with a ruby brown body. Nose is rather malted. No carbonation? Flavour is a tad bitter and not aromatic. This could be too old on the taps?

Deep brown colour with a coppery tint, thin head, malty aroma. Flavour is quite nutty, with some smoky character that I’ve seen in a few of Longwood’s beers. Dark fruitiness and a sharp acidic finish.

Brown with tan head. Great wheat and malt nose.Good wheat malt flavor, quite sweet. Great lace. Good body. The best of their regular beers

Light malty flavour, watery, not very wheaty and missing most of the nice flavours you’d expect in a real Dunkelweizen.

UPDATED: DEC 26, 2004 Golden-brown colour. Bright. Nutmeggy aroma with some dark chocolate notes. Milk chocolate and stable notes on the palate. I got that stable (dung) character in the Pilsner, too, and it’s very distinct and totally inappropriate. Though they shouldn’t be using the same yeast for this as for the Pilsner, maybe they are and maybe that yeast is developing an unpleasant life of its own. Moderate body. Sweetish finish with slight toffee note and lots more of that stable note mixed with cigarette smoke (Longwood is a non-smoking pub).
