I’m happy to report that I was wrong. Aside from a rather lackluster appearance, this is a great beer. A tad sweet, but not overly so. The raisins come out fairly strong in the aftertaste. The flavors really blend well. I can’t think of anything else I’ve had that tastes like this. It’s Superbowl Sunday, I’m playing Fallout 3, and feeling pretty good after drinking this. Cheers. Pours a deep brown, near opaque, with a medium sized thick brown head. Aroma is of cinnamon, brown sugar, the promised raisins, gooey sweet dark malts. Ooh, there is a light smokiness at first, followed by sweet dark candies, dates and figs, alcohol, and minor hoppiness at the end. The smokiness is present throughout but not bullish. I’m also getting some cognac-type liquor flavor in and out. Mouthfeel is full, chewy, heavy. Sticky finish. I like this. Not amazing, but interesting, soulful. Overall, very good to excellent. tdtm82 (99), Essex, England
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jan 31, 2010 An incredibly sweet nutty raisen based ale. Licorish and dark chocolate. An intense beer. Really incredibly full bodied. I feel this is trying to become a Belgian quad. I can note sherry too. It’s really over-powering. Ideal for a tastings’ night though. Enjoyable but a little too much. Not as well balanced as Rochefort or Westvleteren. It is complex and interesting. I’m really surprised. philbertk (445), Seattle, Washington, USA

Tan head is minimal but does maintain a thin rim of lacing throughout. Immediately picked up a bread-like aroma, sweet malts with hints of raisin. The taste is outstanding! Sweet malty flavors with hints of alcohol and dried fruit. Medium body, lively carbonation, and a terrific finish make this a keeper. I wonder how it would have tasted if I let it sit for a year or two! blipp (1814), Newark, New Jersey, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jan 26, 2010 Draft. Pours deep red brown with a thin head. Sweet malty aroma with dark fruits and toffee. The flavor is also sweet, with dark fruits, caramel, and some lighter toasty notes. Yummy. Ethereal (1726), London, Greater London, England
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jan 24, 2010 Large bottle (brought back from Citybeer in SF in March 09), 18th Jan 2010, with tashi & co at home. Rich, malty aroma. Hazy brown, persistent small white head. Cinnamon, gently warming alcohol, some maltiness. Coats the mouth just right. Very enjoyable but not as classic as the Serpent’s Stout. chriso (5049), London, Greater London, England
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Jan 22, 2010 On tap at the Other Side Cafe, Boston, 15 October 2009. Simply stunning, gorgeous stuff. Dark, rich and fruity. Figs and honeyed sweetness without being in any way cloying. Definite vinous elements and just a hint of lactic sourness really give it a great balance and drinkability, although it is really for sipping rather than glugging. Far better than the bottled version that I had tried previously. I should really say a lot more but I’m enjoying it to much to bother scribbling.
