Pours a deep ebony with a finger of java head. Aromas of sweet aspartame, caramel, figs, rosemary, alcohol, and a hint of thyme. Big mother of a body that is syrupy sweet, with flavors of black licorice, rosemary, black pepper, and caramelized honey. This is a fantastic food beer but on its own it severely surpasses a sipping beer. It’s a bit thick, syrupy, sweet, and the alcohol keeps your tongue tingly. However, pour this into some sugar and caramelized onions or pair it with some intense smoked meat (lamb!) or a seriously sharp aged gouda or blue cheese.

On tap at Global Brew. Pours a medium brown with an off white head. Aroma is fruity. Taste is sweet caramel malt, various dark fruits (especially raisins) bread dough and vanilla. A bit of sourness, a tongue coating sweetness and some alcohol also present. Interesting.

0.75 bottle. Dark brown, whitey head. Belgy abbey yeasty spicy, dark bready malty, figsy, ripe raisiny fruityness on nose. Full bodied, bit dusty roasty, peppery, some coffeepowder even. Dark ripe fruity. A really flavourful ale, Some booze, unfortunately, not a too easy one.

10/31/2009 11:53:19 PM Bottle from De Molen. Shared it with two friends from the bottle in train to Utrecht. Dark brown body. Really sweet and malty nose with some sour notes. Taste of fruits, sugar and malts. Notes of wood. Really enjoyable and great bottle to share. (This was consumed after a beer festival--so notes dodgy at this point.)

Had 9/20/14. Tasting notes. Poured a deep brown in a snifter at home with some lively head. Aroma was solid with big spiced notes, caramel malts, sweet roll, baked bread, slight bubblegum. Taste was big malts with caramel, toffee, brown sugar, candy, bubblegum, spices, and dough. Big body, good carb. Vercy complex. Solid beer.

Bottle at tasting. Aroma of caramel, raisin and yeast. Taste is a bit simple, with sweet malt, sweet raisin, sweet ripe fruit and sweet yeast. You get it, it’s a sweet beer.
