Commercial Description:
From the French word "Garde" meaning something worth keeping, this Farmhouse Styled Ale is a most delicious companion to a loaf of freshly baked bread from the oven. Grab a seat on the porch, some soft cheese and a tree ripened apple from your grandmother's old orchard. Relax and watch the evening arrive as the afternoon sun is consumed by the illuminating moon over the gardens. We brewed Avant Garde for you, our friends and families. Here's to things worth guarding over. http://www.lostabbey.com

Beer pours mostly clear golden color with a totally retained egg white head. Aroma of green apples, very light spices, yeast and malt. Flavor is light and effervescent. Lightly sweet with some chalky dryness in the finish. I am thinking this is quite stylistacally accurate. Though the style seems to be even more about subtlety than say saison.

Bottled. Citruspeel and flowery aroma. Cloudy yellow, creamy head. Nice orangezest notes, background bubblegum and vanilla - quite harmonic. Medium sparkly mouthfeel. Nice citrus aftertaste.

On Tap@O’Brien"s: Golden amber color with just a wisp of foam that quickly fades to nothing. Light sweet spicy aroma with a hint of grass. Flavor starts with a little honey then some spice a hint of white wine and pepper. Medium bodied and smooth with soft carbonation.

Bottle sampled on 11/1/06: Pours a clear amber orange bronze with a large, airy, wispy-lacing white head. Aroma of sweet, toasty bready caramel and biscuity malt with an authentic, but mild yeasty presence. Body starts with some lightly sweet, toasty pale malt and some sugar cookie dough flavor showing some more bittering earthy hops toward a thinner, smooth, balanced finish. A nice Biere de Garde.

Bottle. Golden brown, ruby with a small head. Aromas are sweet, malty, herbal and spicy with alcohol. Flavours are sweet caramel and toffee malts with bady yeast. Fruity with ripe pear and raisins. Earthy with light pine hops on the finish. Nice.

Poured a hazy golden color with a white head. Sweet yeasty aroma eith clovey phenolic notes. The sweet flavor had notes of wheat, yeast, sugar, and a fair amount of spice with a bitter finish.

Second go ’round: Poured a hazy golden orange color with a huge off-white head. Yeasty sweet aroma. Citrusy, light lemon, noteswith a touch of spice and light alcohol. Caramel malt makes up the sweetness. The flavor was malty and yeasty with a spiced finish. Semi-dry finish with a lively mouthfeel.

Pours a nice amber body with a head that fades to a weather-pattern mist atop the beer. The aroma is lightly toasted bread crusts, a bit of apple fruitiness and some hops. This is a very relaxing beer.

My Bottom Line:
Chewy bready malts and lingering spicy hops slowly tango on a lightly doughy yeast in this sumptuous and appeasingly honest Bière de Garde.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A veil of foam skirts the hazy straw blond.
-The body is healthy and with the flavor profile creates an authentic Bière de Garde experience.
-The spicy hoppiness (Spalt?) is as present in the aroma as in the finish, balancing out the malty baguette throughout.
-Alcohol is not a player in the flavor profile; this is beautifully drinkable.
-I often get flavors which resemble vegetable broth notes in some Bière de Gardes; no idea how to describe them any differently.

Bottle.
