Late in November of 2011, Mike Rodriguez our head brewer asked about creating a Coffee and Cacoa Nib version of Serpent’s Stout for the San Diego Strong Ale Festival. The beer was a hit with our fans. When we wrote up the syllabus for the Ultimate Box Set, we knew a version of this beer would be included. We waited until the very end of the release schedule to put this beer in a bottle so that the coffee and cacoa nibs really come through. Four Bourbon barrels were selected for their rich and dense chocolate flavors. One week before packaging, we added 17 lbs of Ryan Brothers Coffee and 4 lbs of TCHO Cacao Nibs were added to the coffee and cacao to steep before packaging.

Bottle at mikkeller bar viktoriagade. Coffee, chocolate, can feel the alcohol in the aroma from barrel aging, not from being a strong beer. Black, with Brown head. Medium to heavy sweet. Medium bitter. Tons of coffee. Full body. Very long finish. Real good. You can feel the alcohol, but it is somehow balanced with the flavours. Impressing.

Pale brown head clings to edge of snifter dig the label artwork As it warms I get smoky wood aromas, nose dive 5th heaven trace the barrel coffee and bourbon on the palete, along with brown sugar, coffee on the back, alcohol bum medium body is frothy/fizzy. Wait, is that not an interesting combo? not the most intriguing component here not as heavy as a few others I’ve had the pleasure to have known in this realm but a good track

June 13, 2015. Bottle at home.
Black with a small, dense, quickly dissipating fizzy brown head. Aroma is sweet and bitter roasted with coffee, dark chocolate, molasses, bourbon, some milk chocolate and green pepper notes as well, as it warms up some alcohol notes and a more distinct cold pressed coffee note shines through. Taste is sweet and light bitter vanilla, bourbon and dark sugar, dark chocolate and roasted coffee. The bitterness takes over in the finish with cocoa, cold pressed coffee, green pepper, light vanilla and toffee sweetness and some warming alcohol notes as well. Full bodied, creamy and oily texture, soft carbonation.

My Bottom Line:
This complex Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout showcases chocolate, roasted cereals and molasses within which cherry-like fruitiness and vanilla spiciness manage to create even more interest.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A ring of foam surrounds the darkness.
-Wooden barrel notes are found as well. But the malts and cocoa are the stars here.
-The fruitiness in the finish, with a few alcohol waves, make for a pleasant ending.
-The aroma on this one screams ’dessert’.

On tap at Toronado San Diego.
