Late in November of 2011, Mike Rodriguez our head brewer asked about creating a Coffee and Cacoa Nib version of Serpent’s Stout for the San Diego Strong Ale Festival. The beer was a hit with our fans. When we wrote up the syllabus for the Ultimate Box Set, we knew a version of this beer would be included. We waited until the very end of the release schedule to put this beer in a bottle so that the coffee and cacoa nibs really come through. Four Bourbon barrels were selected for their rich and dense chocolate flavors. One week before packaging, we added 17 lbs of Ryan Brothers Coffee and 4 lbs of TCHO Cacao Nibs were added to the coffee and cacao to steep before packaging.

Track 10. Pours near black with an espresso head. Aroma is loads of chili-like notes that come from the coffee. Taste is semi-sweet with a little roast. Dry finish. Good stuff.

Coffee, chocolate, roasty malts, and bready booze join forces to create the best dark beer in the box. This rivals BCBCS for my favorite coffee-forward stout, and competes for best-of-box accolades.

Sampled at FoBAB ’12. Pours near black with a medium sized tan head. The aroma had roasted malts, coffee, chocolate with mild barrel notes. The flavor had more coffee and chocolate than the nose indicated, roasted malts, bourbon and vanilla with a touch of char at the finish. I thought this was very solid, but more about the treatments than the base beer.

hopscotch (9520) - Vero Beach, Florida, USA - MAR 5, 2013
Bottle... Cloudy dark brown ale with no head. The aromatic highlights are chocolate, coffee beans, coconut and a slight red wine component. Medium-bodied with lazy carbonation. Roasty, carbonic, coffee and cacao flavor with a splash of red wine. Finishes burnt, boozy and fairly bitter.

Served in a Lost Abbey teku glass. Nose is really heavy coffee with nice chocolate in the background. Roasted cocoa and smooth coffee. Creamy and full body. Fairly smooth. All in all, tastes really nice but the base beer isn’t present at all. Just a lot of coffee and chocolate. Still, quite enjoyable.

Bottle. Dark black pour with a chocolate head. Big coffee aromas. Deep roasted malts, caramel, chocolate, and coffee notes. Fabulous lacing. Good body and carbonation. Well done....

Track 10 375mL bottle thanks to Dan! Shared with GT2 and company. Jet black pour. Tons of coffee and dark chocolate in the nose. Same in flavor, has the super rich melted dark chocolate/Mexican hot chocolate character. Not sweet, very density, spicy. Ultra thick palate. Definitely a dessert beer, but not cloying. Decadent, soft. Very nice. Serpents Stout is one of my favorites and this was an improvement over that if it’s even possible. Very excited to have had this rarity.

Sampled at FOBAB ’12. Black with a beige head. Roasted malt aroma. Really roasted burnt and tasty. Light sweet a little dry. Lots if burnt malt and roast a little coffee. Almost harsh on the throat. Creamy. Good. 8/4/8/3/16

Track 10 bottle pours with a mahogany body that supports a tan head of foam. The aroma offers up dark roasted malts, burnt malts, rich dark roasted coffee and then some faint smooth bourbon booze. The taste is rich and deep with dark roasted malts and yummy rich oily dark roasted coffee. It maintains the yummy rich dark roastiness to midway where a modest smooth sweet bourbon booze note joins in and helps take this into the finish. Dynamite.

GT2 (8741) - San Diego County, California, USA - FEB 3, 2013
375mL thanks to dfroms! Inky black pour. Reddish foam. Green coffee nose, moving to hazelnut, rich spicy dark chocolate, ancho chilies...as it warms the green coffee sort of dissipates and brings amaretto and some porcini mushroom/soy/umami character. Taste is delicious: muted spice, melted dark chocolate bar, some lactic acid and hop bitterness balance. Ultra rich cacao chocolate. I still like normal Serpents Stout, no green coffee nose and similar superlative palate. Also accessible, larger quantity. Fiance rating: 4.2
