Late in November of 2011, Mike Rodriguez our head brewer asked about creating a Coffee and Cacoa Nib version of Serpent’s Stout for the San Diego Strong Ale Festival. The beer was a hit with our fans. When we wrote up the syllabus for the Ultimate Box Set, we knew a version of this beer would be included. We waited until the very end of the release schedule to put this beer in a bottle so that the coffee and cacoa nibs really come through. Four Bourbon barrels were selected for their rich and dense chocolate flavors. One week before packaging, we added 17 lbs of Ryan Brothers Coffee and 4 lbs of TCHO Cacao Nibs were added to the coffee and cacao to steep before packaging.

Murky muddy brown with a small latte cap. Nose of bourbon, vanilla, Starbucks, spicy green pepper, and cocoa. Similar flavor with the green pepper more dominant. Love the deScription...just wish this one fit the bill.

Pour opaque Black, with a small dark khaki head. Aroma has plenty of coffee, wood, bitter chocolate, green pebers. Taste is pretty bitter, with some slightly sweet notes to it. Semi full bodied, with a rather flat carbonation.

Pours brownish black with a lasting beige head. Nose has clayish mineral green pepper notes.. Some coffee, some chocolate. Taste is fairly roasted with the vinous coffee notes coming through pretty strong. Mouthfeel is silky smooth with very little carbonation. Oaky finish but not too much bourbon. Aftertaste is lasting with some licorice and semi bitter dark chocolate.

Bottle. Nose of bourbon, vanilla, chocolate, light berries. Black, flat. chocolate-marshamallow flavor bomb. Sweet and creamy, lots of vanilla and bourbon. Light, soft carbonation, oily body. A bit one-dimensional and over-religant on additives, but very likable nonetheless.

Bottle from Beer Junction in west Seattle ( just down the street from Seattle Fish Co., the best damn seafood biz in Seattle!). Colour...onyx with a corpulent tan head. Nose...coffee ganache and buttercream chocolate with hints of spice. Palate...muscular and intense with spiciness and dark chocolate. The mid palate is gripping and tight with peppery notes and a long bitter finish.
