Late in November of 2011, Mike Rodriguez our head brewer asked about creating a Coffee and Cacoa Nib version of Serpent’s Stout for the San Diego Strong Ale Festival. The beer was a hit with our fans. When we wrote up the syllabus for the Ultimate Box Set, we knew a version of this beer would be included. We waited until the very end of the release schedule to put this beer in a bottle so that the coffee and cacoa nibs really come through. Four Bourbon barrels were selected for their rich and dense chocolate flavors. One week before packaging, we added 17 lbs of Ryan Brothers Coffee and 4 lbs of TCHO Cacao Nibs were added to the coffee and cacao to steep before packaging.

Very black pour, mild tan foam. Aroma - bourbon, marshmallow. Taste is very strong dark chocolate, strong bourbon, bitter coffee, lots of chocolate, tang of barrel, some sharp dark fruits, bitter oaky finish. Palate is medium carbonation. Overall goodish stout, much better than their serpents stout in my opinion, but far from world class. Just lacks a fair bit of care - seems thrown together like too many of the Lost Abbey darker strong ales.

UPDATED: SEP 8, 2015 Bottle thanks to dogday. Black pour with a small creamy head that fades to a ring. Aromas are dark chocolate, roasted coffee, caramel, vanilla, and light bourbon. Taste is loaded with dark chocolate. Very nice bitter coffee too. Bourbon barrel influence is pretty subtle but very nice and smooth. Medium body. Light booze in the finish. Very nice. Re-rate 9/8/15 - Much better this time. Big chocolate, vanilla and coffee, light smooth bourbon. Excellent mouthfeel. This held its own on a night we open some great beers. Need to bump it up a little. Original rate was 3.9.

Pours black into a snifter. Mocha head with medium retention recedes to skim surface. Bourbon, vanilla and oak aromas. Thick with sweet vanilla upfront turning to bourbon-laced hot chocolate before the lasting espresso finish.

5 ounce sample on tap at Davis Beer Shoppe. Aroma is full of semi sweet cocoa powder. Not much else. Quaffable enough. Opaque inky black with a medium brown head. Good lacing. Starts with lots of unsweetened chocolate. Becomes a bit chalky and roasted in the middle with coffee flavors. Finish is warming, with somewhat harsh bitter roastiness.

On tap @ Lord Hobo.

Appearance: Pitch black with a creamy dark brown head and little lacing.

Aroma: Burst of chocolate and cacao along roasted malt, coffee beans, vanilla, bourbon, caramel, light spiciness and tobacco. Rich and complex.

Taste: Taste is even richer than the aroma. Massive chocolate and coffee presence along vanilla, bourbon, caramel, tobacco and oak. Medium to heavy sweetness, balanced by the alcohol and the rich flavors.

Palate: Full body. Medium carbonation. Rich and thick mouthfeel. Warming finish. Lingering chocolate, coffee and tobacco finish.

Overall: Impressive RIS by Lost Abbey. Really tasty, rich and flavorful but also quite well balanced and cohesive. Loved it.
