Late in November of 2011, Mike Rodriguez our head brewer asked about creating a Coffee and Cacoa Nib version of Serpent’s Stout for the San Diego Strong Ale Festival. The beer was a hit with our fans. When we wrote up the syllabus for the Ultimate Box Set, we knew a version of this beer would be included. We waited until the very end of the release schedule to put this beer in a bottle so that the coffee and cacoa nibs really come through. Four Bourbon barrels were selected for their rich and dense chocolate flavors. One week before packaging, we added 17 lbs of Ryan Brothers Coffee and 4 lbs of TCHO Cacao Nibs were added to the coffee and cacao to steep before packaging.

Oct 2015 - Keg at Route CBC event as ’Lost Abbey Track #10 (Bat out of Hell)’. Black big foamy dark brown head. Aroma is typical American impy - meaty sugars and molasses. Also some woody bourbon and booze. Body is medium, smooth, soft carbonation. Taste is molasses, rich chocolate sauce, coffee, with some wood in the finish. Quite nice in small amounts, but too much like molasses to get a higher rating from me.

On tap @ Chuck’s CD. Pours viscous super dark brown with very thin mocha head that fades quickly. Aroma is deep, roasted chocolate malt, dark chocolate nibs, vanilla, oak, lightly crisp hops on the back. Taste is endlessly rich and deep dark chocolate, fresh roasted coffee, port, bourbon, oak; tons of barrel-aged flavor. Dry clean finish. Hard to believe this was once Serpent’s Stout, and that’s an excellent beer. Just incredible depth and richness here.

Bottle. Pours pitch black, with a finger thick creamy brown head. Aroma is dark chocolate, coffee and bourbon barrels with vanilla and tobacco, as well as notes of liquorice. Full, velvety body, with very soft carbonation. Flavour is roasted malts with cocoa, liquorice, coffee and bourbon, as well as notes of lactose, dark fruits, wood and chilies. Lingering raw cocoa through the finish.

Bottle at Craigs. Pours oily jet black with no head. Aromas of tar, prunes, leather, bourbon, coconut, soy sauce. Taste is bourbon, boozy, soy sauce. Rich texture. Oily texture, boozy chocolate finish.

Opaque black with a small, tan head that left nice lacing on the glass. Aroma of chocolate, coffee, roasted malts, dark fruits, wood, vanilla, bourbony alcohol. Taste of chocolate, roasted malts, coffee, charred wood, some vanilla, light alcohol in the finish.

Thick dark brown with no head. Nose is a cough syrup sweetness and dark berry coconut. Initial taste is rich liquorice and tease of thick roast. Soft carbonation and thickest mouthfeel. Finishes pinches of spice and wafts of sweetness,lingers a bit hit but coconut and rich choc.
