COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Late in November of 2011, Mike Rodriguez our head brewer asked about creating a Coffee and Cacoa Nib version of Serpent’s Stout for the San Diego Strong Ale Festival. The beer was a hit with our fans. When we wrote up the syllabus for the Ultimate Box Set, we knew a version of this beer would be included. We waited until the very end of the release schedule to put this beer in a bottle so that the coffee and cacoa nibs really come through. Four Bourbon barrels were selected for their rich and dense chocolate flavors. One week before packaging, we added 17 lbs of Ryan Brothers Coffee and 4 lbs of TCHO Cacao Nibs were added to the coffee and cacao to steep before packaging.

37.5cl bottle served in a snifter. Pitch black, thick oily and a generous dark brown head which dissipates quickly. Aroma is heavy bourbon, vanilla, oak, chocolate, fruit cake and booze. Taste is upfront sweetness with the creamy buttery bourbon taste but slightly hotter than some barrel aged imperial stouts which holds up well against the extreme level of flavours. The barrel aging has taken the rough edges from the standard serpent’s stout and the added chocolate and coffee give an even more decadent backdrop of flavours. A thick and sticky mouthfeel with low carbonation but perfect for the style and as such gets a perfect score.

Bottle at Dangerous Bottleshares #17. Pours black with a dark brown head. Aroma of vanilla, chocolate, sweet bourbon, coffee, cocoa, toffee and some weak smoke. All in such a nice balance with each other. Awesome aroma. The taste has roasted malts, vanilla, coffee, dark fruits, cocoa and some bourbon. Awesome stuff. Better than expected!

Bottle at Dangerous Bottleshares #17. Pours a pitch black with a nice, big, dark tan head. Aroma has lots of dark chocolate, bourbon, coffee, vanilla, figs, sweet bourbon, dark malts, caramel, toast. Taste is more dry coffee, dark chocolate, bourbon, caramel, booze, fairly sweet, light bitterness. Light fruity. Nice, full body and a fairly low carbonation.

12.7 oz bottle. Monks Cafe Philly. Shared two ways. Served in lost abbey glass. Fairly dark tan head goes down quick. Little bit of lacing. Beer is black. Aroma is malty with notes of coffee, toffee and molasses, chocolate and bourbon. Taste is bitter and acidic from coffee. Notes of coffee, chocolate, vanilla, and bourbon. Some sweetness. Full bodied, light carbonation. Fairly smooth finish. Overall a very strong and very complex beer. Very good.

Bottle from Vinmonopolet. Pours thick black oily with a small creamy dark tanned head. Very intense and complex aroma, roasted malts, vanilla, liquorice, cocoa and chocolate, coffee and bourbon. Thick oily mouthfeel, soft carbonated. Taste is filled with the same, loaded with weak roasty malts, delightful vanilla and thick creamy chocolate, lingering and lingering, a prober celebration of

my beer # 7000.

Oct 2015 - Keg at Route CBC event as ’Lost Abbey Track #10 (Bat out of Hell)’. Black big foamy dark brown head. Aroma is typical American impy - meaty sugars and molasses. Also some woody bourbon and booze. Body is medium, smooth, soft carbonation. Taste is molasses, rich chocolate sauce, coffee, with some wood in the finish. Quite nice in small amounts, but too much like molasses to get a higher rating from me.

On tap @ Chuck’s CD. Pours viscous super dark brown with very thin mocha head that fades quickly. Aroma is deep, roasted chocolate malt, dark chocolate nibs, vanilla, oak, lightly crisp hops on the back. Taste is endlessly rich and deep dark chocolate, fresh roasted coffee, port, bourbon, oak; tons of barrel-aged flavor. Dry clean finish. Hard to believe this was once Serpent’s Stout, and that’s an excellent beer. Just incredible depth and richness here.

Bottle. Pours pitch black, with a finger thick creamy brown head. Aroma is dark chocolate, coffee and bourbon barrels with vanilla and tobacco, as well as notes of liquorice. Full, velvety body, with very soft carbonation. Flavour is roasted malts with cocoa, liquorice, coffee and bourbon, as well as notes of lactose, dark fruits, wood and chilies. Lingering raw cocoa through the finish.
