Late in November of 2011, Mike Rodriguez our head brewer asked about creating a Coffee and Cacoa Nib version of Serpent’s Stout for the San Diego Strong Ale Festival. The beer was a hit with our fans. When we wrote up the syllabus for the Ultimate Box Set, we knew a version of this beer would be included. We waited until the very end of the release schedule to put this beer in a bottle so that the coffee and cacoa nibs really come through. Four Bourbon barrels were selected for their rich and dense chocolate flavors. One week before packaging, we added 17 lbs of Ryan Brothers Coffee and 4 lbs of TCHO Cacao Nibs were added to the coffee and cacao to steep before packaging.

Draft. Black. Tight lasting brown head. A nimble, easier drinking body. Coffee. Dark fruit. Bourbon barrel. Chocolate. Caramel. Awesome balance, nothing dominant. Fantastic aroma. Delicious! Warming alcohol. Tips towards sweet, just excellent. Like this a lot.

375-ml bottle @ localoptionbier. it was nice to be back. chocolate nose, creamy, licorice, coffee, bourbon, some dark fruit as it warmed up, which took a lot of patience. wish more of these trains stopped in chicago. label said 13.5%.

Das Bier ist total schwarz und hat eine wunderschöne braune stabile Schaumkrone. Geruch nach viel Kaffee, reife Früchte, Vanille, Holzfass, alkoholisch. Geschmack kräftig röstmalzig, Kaffee, Vanille, Holz, reife Früchte, alkoholisch, dieses Bier ist wunderbar!

12.7 oz bottle. Monks Cafe Philly. Shared two ways. Served in lost abbey glass. Fairly dark tan head goes down quick. Little bit of lacing. Beer is black. Aroma is malty with notes of coffee, toffee and molasses, chocolate and bourbon. Taste is bitter and acidic from coffee. Notes of coffee, chocolate, vanilla, and bourbon. Some sweetness. Full bodied, light carbonation. Fairly smooth finish. Overall a very strong and very complex beer. Very good.

Bottle from Voldby. Pours pitch black with a brown head. Aroma and taste is roasted malts, dark chocolate, coffee, cacao, vanilla, dark fruits, bourbon. Full body. Oily texture. Thick creamy mouthfeel. Soft carbonation. Light bitter warming finish. Excellent.

Servida en un Spiegelau tulip. APARIENCIA: de color completamente negro, no pasa nada de luz a través de ella; corona de espuma color marrón de burbujas compactas y abiertas, de baja retención que rapidamente se disipa a sólo un anillo alrededor de la bebida. AROMA: El aroma es dulce y licoroso; se percibe bourbon dulce, notas a vainilla y en menor medida coco y algo de madera, además mucho chocolate amargo y semiamargo, más sutilmente caramelo, melaza, cerezas negras, café tostado, cuero y tabaco. Se alcanza a percibir el licor pero no es agresivo. SABOR: de inicio se siente dulce, al pasar el trago quedan las notas a chocolate amargo y semiamargo lo cual es dominante además del bourbon, vainilla, ligeramente coco y madera, seguido de más chocolate y bourbon, caramelo, melaza, cerezas negras, tabaco, cuero, en algunos tragos hay presencia del café tostado marcado pero en otros no tanto. El retrogusto queda amargor medio bajo, dulce y con persistencia de las notas a chocolate y bourbon. SENSACIÓN: cuerpo medio con sensación untuosa, baja carbonatación. El alcohol no se percibe, sólo el pasar el trago como una sensación cálida en garganta nada agresiva. RESUMEN: excelente cerveza, de lo mejor que he probado en el estilo.

At Avery’s 2012 Strong Ale Fest. Black with no head. Aroma of wood, Hershey’s chocolate, maybe some anise, but mostly smells like barrel aged hersheys. Taste starts smooth but gets a little oaky, with lots of chocolaty sweetness and delicious black roast coffee. Smooth and sweet, slightly boozy and a firm oak tone throughout.

Draught @ Copenhagen Beer Celebration 2012.
Pours a pitch black colour with a white foamy head which collapses quickly. The aroma is very intense; roasted malts, vanilla, bourbon and some sweet dried fruits. Flavour is even more intense; at first roasted malts, dark chocolate and sweet dried fruits, but after a while vanilla and bourbon take over. Mellow oaky notes in the finish, which create a dry and smooth finish. Full bodied, oily mouthfeel and soft carbonation. Awesome beer and clearly one of the best beers I’ve ever tasted. Just wow.

Draught at CBC 2012. Pitch black - brown head. Cacao, coffee, burned notes, nice oakey, fruity, high malty, light hoppy, nice sweetness, chocolate, bourbon, vanilla, dry cacao. Fantastic balance.

Pours pitch black with a tan head. Aroma has notes of roasted malt, chocolate, cocoa, coffee, oak and alcohol. Taste is heavy sweet and light bitter with a long cocoa, chocolate and coffee finish. Body is full, texture is oily to sticky, carbonation is flat to soft.
