COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Late in November of 2011, Mike Rodriguez our head brewer asked about creating a Coffee and Cacoa Nib version of Serpentís Stout for the San Diego Strong Ale Festival. The beer was a hit with our fans. When we wrote up the syllabus for the Ultimate Box Set, we knew a version of this beer would be included. We waited until the very end of the release schedule to put this beer in a bottle so that the coffee and cacoa nibs really come through. Four Bourbon barrels were selected for their rich and dense chocolate flavors. One week before packaging, we added 17 lbs of Ryan Brothers Coffee and 4 lbs of TCHO Cacao Nibs were added to the coffee and cacao to steep before packaging.

UPDATED: NOV 17, 2015 Bottle to sampler at Fobab. Shit man this was the best of the night. Coffee and chocolate. Touch of bourbon. Everything perfectly balanced. This is great stuff, really wish they made more. 11/16/13 4.5

2015 375. Well my wish came true, unfortunately this isnít the same beer. Hot, barrel heavy. Hot whiskey and oak. Coffee and chocolate are there, but the barrel is really dominating. Body is a bit thin. This is definitely a different beer. Maybe it needs time to settle, or maybe just not as good. 4/29/14 3.7

Bottle gift from SJ. This brew has a lot going on, but it is awesome. Notes of cacao, burnt / roasted malts, wood, a rich and dark chocolate, coffee, vanilla, and brown sugar. The blend is amazing, itís like they took serpent stout which is all ready phenomenal and made it better.

Bottle poured black with dark tan head. Fresh cut wood with Bourbon, followed with chocolate and alcohol. Love the balance of flavors. A rich blend of Oak, Bourbon, chocolate, vanilla. Great full palate. Smooth with burn. This would get better with a year of age. Must fine another bottle to save. Love the label.

Pours pitch black with a one finger tan head which fades to just a little lacing. Aroma is of roadrwd malts, bourbon, spicy dark chocolate, coffee, dark fruits, anise, licorice, and some light booze. Taste is bourbon, spicy coco, dark fruits, roasted malts, dark roasted coffee, licorice, anise, woody notes, and some light booze in the finish. Has a medium-full body with a creamy mouthfeel, and a semi bitter, warming, slightly hot, long, lingering finish overall, excellent BBA imperial stout that features coco nibs nicely and hides its high abv pretty nicely

Wow. Appearance: black pour with a solid caramel colored head ringing the glass. Aroma: bitter chocolate and coffee, pleasant bourbon, sweet mild smoke/smoldering hard wood. Taste: huge bitter chocolate initially, but gives way to a balance of mocha espresso and bourbon. Finished with a nice bourbon/burnt sugar sweetness. Palate: mouthfeel is perfect, but thereís an astringent lingering on the tongue that isnít quite right. Overall a phenomenal bourbon stout.

Tastes of dark chocolate, bourbon, subtle dark fruit, roasted coffee, subtle hint of booze. Full body with a dry finish. Dangerously well masked alcohol for 13.5% ABV.

Pours oily black color, haze, with unstable foamy brown head, which transform itself to a tiny ring around the glass. Visually low carbonation. Aroma: intense aroma of bourbon, oak, vanilla, cacao, of dark malts, which takes on coffee and dark chocolate. Flavor: rich dark malts flavor, which takes on coffee, dark chocolate and cocoa. There also detectable additions, so Cacao nibs as Coffee, supported with notes of dark fruits, especially of prunes, cherries, plums, and supported with flavor of bourbon, vanilla and oak, which steps forward from the background. Taste is namelly malty sweet, than you detect gentle bitterness and discrete alcohol warmth, which immediately steps forward and lingering parallel with malt sweetness in finish. Finish is dry, sticky. Body is full, carbonation is low, texture is very smooth. World-class imperial stout/doubble american.

On tap 4 oz. taster at the Lost Abbey/ Brewing tasting room. Opaque, near black with a brown head and excellent lacing. Aroma of roasted coffee, mocha, chocolate milk, bourbon, tobacco, roasted malt, vanilla and oak. Taste of dark chocolate, bourbon, licorice, roasted malt, vanilla, oak, alcohol, roasted coffee and heaven on earth. Full/medium body and medium/low carbonization with a glorious mouthfeel. At 13.5%, it's hard to hind the alcohol. Other than that one blemish, this is a fabulous beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

erved on tap at the 15th San Diego Strong Ale Festival. The appearance is a rich black hue, not much notable head.. The aromas bourbon and coffee with the coffee coming through very heavily and wonderful. A bold roast of coffee. The flavors enter with wonderful coffee, and roasted malts. The mid layers you get some smooth bourbon and a moderate chard barrel level. There some nice chocolate flavors in here as well. Although I swear cacao nibs in beers never really give the chocolate flavors (likely from the lack of cream and sugar) but perhaps they have a different variety with more cocoa butter or the chocolate is more influenced from the malt bill. The mouth is smooth and full. Perfectly carbonated. The coffee in this beer really shines. This makes me want to revisit the Serpentís Stout, one I wasnít a huge fan of last time because the the yeast profile that I do not get in this variety at all.
