COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Late in November of 2011, Mike Rodriguez our head brewer asked about creating a Coffee and Cacoa Nib version of Serpent’s Stout for the San Diego Strong Ale Festival. The beer was a hit with our fans. When we wrote up the syllabus for the Ultimate Box Set, we knew a version of this beer would be included. We waited until the very end of the release schedule to put this beer in a bottle so that the coffee and cacoa nibs really come through. Four Bourbon barrels were selected for their rich and dense chocolate flavors. One week before packaging, we added 17 lbs of Ryan Brothers Coffee and 4 lbs of TCHO Cacao Nibs were added to the coffee and cacao to steep before packaging.

Enjoyed on tap at FOBAB. Served in my FOBAB taster. A: Pours a dark black color with a very dark tan head forming on the pour. It recedes slowly to a thick ring that leaves some splotchy lace. S: Huge notes of fresh coffee bean, chocolate, roasted malts and espresso. There is a faint barrel smell in the background, but this is heavily dominated by the coffee and chocolate. T: The taste follows the nose with a more roasted malt presence and touch more barrel. Vanilla espresso, freshly ground coffee beans, milk chocolate and roasted malts. Some light oak with just a kiss of bourbon. Booze is hidden extremely well. M: Medium low carbonation with a heavy mouthfeel. Decadent and creamy. O: While this beer was lacking the in your face bourbon barrel we’ve all come to love I think this limited barrel actually worked with this beer. It made the coffee and cocoa flavors the stars of the show. I’d love to try this again. Serving type: on-tap

Pours black into a snifter. Mocha head with medium retention recedes to skim surface. Bourbon, vanilla and oak aromas. Thick with sweet vanilla upfront turning to bourbon-laced hot chocolate before the lasting espresso finish.

5 ounce sample on tap at Davis Beer Shoppe. Aroma is full of semi sweet cocoa powder. Not much else. Quaffable enough. Opaque inky black with a medium brown head. Good lacing. Starts with lots of unsweetened chocolate. Becomes a bit chalky and roasted in the middle with coffee flavors. Finish is warming, with somewhat harsh bitter roastiness.

On tap @ Lord Hobo.

Appearance: Pitch black with a creamy dark brown head and little lacing.

Aroma: Burst of chocolate and cacao along roasted malt, coffee beans, vanilla, bourbon, caramel, light spiciness and tobacco. Rich and complex.

Taste: Taste is even richer than the aroma. Massive chocolate and coffee presence along vanilla, bourbon, caramel, tobacco and oak. Medium to heavy sweetness, balanced by the alcohol and the rich flavors.

Palate: Full body. Medium carbonation. Rich and thick mouthfeel. Warming finish. Lingering chocolate, coffee and tobacco finish.

Overall: Impressive RIS by Lost Abbey. Really tasty, rich and flavorful but also quite well balanced and cohesive. Loved it.

Dark tan head. Thick and lasting, but a bit small. The liquid is very dark where no light shines through. Plenty of blanketing lace on the glass. The smell starts with a sweetness I didn’t expect. It’s almost like an after dinner drink. The taste is extremely rich, like biting into a rich brownie. Yet, it’s not so sweet. Lots of semisweet chocolate. Chewy in terms of body with a light carbonation touch. The aftertaste is of dark malt and is long lasting.
