Late in November of 2011, Mike Rodriguez our head brewer asked about creating a Coffee and Cacoa Nib version of Serpent’s Stout for the San Diego Strong Ale Festival. The beer was a hit with our fans. When we wrote up the syllabus for the Ultimate Box Set, we knew a version of this beer would be included. We waited until the very end of the release schedule to put this beer in a bottle so that the coffee and cacoa nibs really come through. Four Bourbon barrels were selected for their rich and dense chocolate flavors. One week before packaging, we added 17 lbs of Ryan Brothers Coffee and 4 lbs of TCHO Cacao Nibs were added to the coffee and cacao to steep before packaging.

This owns. The coffee still remains. The cacao is a bit less notable but it’s a damn tasty beer. A bit heavy, and sweet, but I’d recommend anyone who likes their earthy coffee beers pick this bad boy up. Thanks David.

Bottle sample at FoBAB 2013, pours opaque black. Nose bourbon some coco. Almost pepper smell. Taste chocolate and coffee come through in the taste. Bourbon adding chartacter not overpowering. Roasty finish.

Sampler at fobab. Pour dark brown with thin head. Nose is of chipotle coffee and chocolate. Peppery taste with exceptional balance.

"Bat out of hell" från Lost Abbey boxen, (som tydligen var alias med denna). Aska kaffesump och nyskuren chili. Intensiva smaker av kaffe som hänger i. Viss beska mot slutet. Lite småvass. Bourbon kan anas.

Bottle at Theis. Pitch black with a small dark brown head. Lots of coffee in the nose, cocoa, lots of coffee, light acidic, burnt malts. Medium/full body, oily texture, near flat carbonation. Medium/heavy sweet and bitter.

Bottle at Theis LA-box tasting. Pours a liqiuid tar with no head. Quite sweet with a heavy malty bitterness. Light aromas of green peppers and fresh coffee beans. Medium to full bodied. Medium to soft carbonation. Bitter finish.

Bottle to taster at FoBAB. Looks good; a dull, dark brownish black with beige lacing. Smells of dark malt and the barrel treatment with some pepper spiciness. Tastes like it smells with an average mouthfeel. Not sure where the pepper notes came from, but they were definitely there to me.

Sample from a bottle at FOBAB 2013. Pours a deep, dark, opaque brown with a sizeable brown ring for a head. Very, very rich- roasted malts, dark chocolate, coffee, cacao nibs, vanilla, burnt brown sugar, toasted oak, fudge, and molasses. Full-bodied, with a smooth, rich, coating mouthfeel and moderate carbonation. Very good take on Serpent’s Stout, which I love. So I wouldn’t call it an improvement but it’s also no worse. Beat the hell out of Track 13 next to it.

Bottled offering at fobab. Strong preference for regular serpants stout. This was much sweeter. Not liking vanilla addition. Okay in small doses. But too much sugar sweet doughy vanilla offered. Would have preferred more dark chocolate roasty bitterness. Good if you like sweet vanilla stouts. Perhaps. bit too sweet otherwise.

Bottle to sampler at Fobab. Shit man this was the best of the night. Coffee and chocolate. Touch of bourbon. Everything perfectly balanced. Thid is great stuff, really wish they made more.
