Track 12 is a non fruited sour ale. It is a blend of three base beers (Avant Garde, a previously unreleased sour brown base and Gift of the Magi). There were two barrels of Avant Garde, one oak barrel of the sour brown and a splash of the Magi in the final blend. The final blend has flavors of sweet and sour with a pronounced musty nose. Unlike any other sour beer we have produced here at The Lost Abbey, this one has some very long term possibilities. It’s hard to believe just how much faith there is in Heaven and Hell considering nobody we know has ever sent pictures from the Pearly Gates or the Crossroads of Hell. Your jet-setting boss can’t claim to have a timeshare in Heaven. The food snob at work can’t peruse Yelp reviews to determine if the gluttonous all you can eat lobster buffet is mediocre or divine. And last we checked you can’t book a room at either place on Internet travel sites. Pretty much not a single person any of us knows can tell what Heaven and Hell are like. Yet they persist, with their fantastic imaginative descriptions and visions of banished heathens and the faithful being given their eternal rest. But not us. We here at The Lost Abbey figure our days are better spent on things other than worrying about our ever after. So each morning we get up and make beers for “Sinners and Saints Alike.” And when we fail to respire, we’ll let Heaven or Hell take us wherever the cosmos point us. Of course it doesn’t mean we’re not silently hoping they need great brewers in Heaven—especially ones with Hellish imaginations…

Tasted at the brewery of course and poured into an LA tulip. Orange brown in color with a small head. Some funk and oak in the aroma. Flavors were mildly tart along with the barrel and spice of the Gift of The Magi. Interesting and good beer with maybe cool potential to age well. We will all see.

Bottle @ GT’s Cat Cabana. Thanks, GT. Amber pour with a small white head. Nose is chocolate, currants, lemon, and oak. A touch of vinegar, toasted nuts, and vanilla. Pretty meh. Acetic sourness on the tongue. Lemon, old chocolate, and currants. A touch of caramel, some toasted nuts, vanilla, and oak. Not a fan.

Bottle @ Theis. Pours hazy yellow with a small off-white head. Aroma is brett, nice citrus, complex, floral, spice and oak. Taste is moderate sweet, bitter and tart. Body is light, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. Finishes dry and tart. Super nice.

> A musty, basement type of red sour

[ Bottle ][ dfroms ][ 375mL ][ Trade ][ Stemless Wine Taster ][ 4/26/14 ]
>> Pours a low haze orange gold, spotty lace, good carbonation. Nose is musty, perfume, orange peel, decent basement/cobwebs, sharp saltwater, acetic fumes. Taste is perfumey and dry, big orange peel, lightly tart, not acetic really. Body seems a bit thin, dry, minerally. It has some character of a dark sour or Flemish red in there. Fairly nice.

>!< watery body, strange musty mix

Bottle shared at the BIG Friday tasting, massive thanks to our Ken for sharing the entire track set and also to Bruce for providing the accompanying music 03/01/14. Murky orange amber with a moderate off white swirl that clings to the edge. Nose is tangy apricot, soured fruits, dank wood, orange, earthy, funk, musty fruit bowl. Taste comprises tarte fruit youghurt, orange pith, apricot, tangy, musty, dank wood, straw, lemon sherbet. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, drying closure with tangy fruit acidity. Nice sour.

Bottle, generously shared by Kenny at the BIG Friday tasting. It pours hazy golden-amber with a small beige head. The nose is musty, barnyard, earthy, peach, apricot, bread and vanilla. The taste is crisp, tart peach, apricot, sherbet, sour yoghurt, funk and some acidity with a dry, tart finish. Medium body and fine, effervescent carbonation. Tasty and brilliant balance. Bright and delicious. Perhaps my favourite of the set.
