Track 12 is a non fruited sour ale. It is a blend of three base beers (Avant Garde, a previously unreleased sour brown base and Gift of the Magi). There were two barrels of Avant Garde, one oak barrel of the sour brown and a splash of the Magi in the final blend. The final blend has flavors of sweet and sour with a pronounced musty nose. Unlike any other sour beer we have produced here at The Lost Abbey, this one has some very long term possibilities. It’s hard to believe just how much faith there is in Heaven and Hell considering nobody we know has ever sent pictures from the Pearly Gates or the Crossroads of Hell. Your jet-setting boss can’t claim to have a timeshare in Heaven. The food snob at work can’t peruse Yelp reviews to determine if the gluttonous all you can eat lobster buffet is mediocre or divine. And last we checked you can’t book a room at either place on Internet travel sites. Pretty much not a single person any of us knows can tell what Heaven and Hell are like. Yet they persist, with their fantastic imaginative descriptions and visions of banished heathens and the faithful being given their eternal rest. But not us. We here at The Lost Abbey figure our days are better spent on things other than worrying about our ever after. So each morning we get up and make beers for “Sinners and Saints Alike.” And when we fail to respire, we’ll let Heaven or Hell take us wherever the cosmos point us. Of course it doesn’t mean we’re not silently hoping they need great brewers in Heaven—especially ones with Hellish imaginations…

Bottle shared at the Santa Cruz boxset tasting. Huge brett aroma. Really awesome mix of lemon, chlorine, horseblanket. Flavor is a step down, woody and tart but not a lot else. Combine this aroma with Track 3’s flavor and you have a 100th percentile sour.

Bottle shared by Adam, thanks! Pours a hazy deep amber orange with a white head that starts and remains at the edges. Aroma has sour cherry and red fruits with light acid and oak. Flavor has a nice sour fruit note with earthy funk, some oak and a bit of acid.

375ml bottle acquired via trade on BA. Shared with deyholla. Pours a nice copper rose hue, a gentle haziness but largely transparent with a very pretty color, rich glow. Frothy whitish head stays as a decent ringer, laces nicely. Aromas are funky and a bit fruity, dried and dark fruit, subtle plum and date meet subtle raisin, earth, some lactic appeal. Firmer bretty funk, some mellow oak, cobwebs and some vinous and black cherry character. Initial is lighter bodied, some expressive middling acidity compliments gentle estery fruit character, earth, and cobwebs. Some mellow oak, wine barrel and a bit of cranberry. Earthy, funky, a more sustained wild offering that restrains the acidity, let’s the brett express itself a bit better. Some tannic barrel appeal, some dryness and lingering funk, subtle yogurt, melon, and crab apple. A bit of earthy and grainy sweetness, on point wild yeast with a pretty masterful blend. Complex, dry, funky, oak. Tasty stuff.

Thanks to Kraddel. 375 ml. bottle split by 2. Pours a dark amber, little white head on the side. Nose is fascinating, puckering oak with a touch of glue but lots of mandarin, fruity mixed with some candy sugar malts, wonderful mix of malts & great sour character. Taste is puckering big fruity mandarin, just the right touch of candy malts, great mix with light honey, oak, brett, very light lactic, lemon, fascinating complimentary touch of caramel, fruity wine, caramel & puckering sour,… Fittingly malty body but only lightly so with quite a bit of oak, touch wine, caramel,… Really good. Lost Abbey sours are amazing. Great beer.

Bottle shared with Pat. Only fitting to share this with Annie since he introduced me to the Abbey 8 years ago, pours clearish Orange, with small head and not much lacing Aroma is insanely vintage musty oak, lemon barn, vanilla and popcorn kernel like complexity. Flavor had dark cherries, lemons, red vino and rich, oaky tannins. Lighter bodied. Smell was almost lambic like. One of the better american sours I have had in awhile. Glad to put the box set to rest......rip

Bottle shared with me generously by Vinny. Pours glowing copper with a fine, silky white head. Nose is undulating waves of wood and dry red wine. Mouth is substantial without heaviness; lemon, oak, cedar, cherry, and must. Finishes cleanly without the sharpness of most sours. Elegant beer that’d definitely taste gnarly with a few years of age under her.
