In July of 2009, the Matts and a couple of the guys flew down from Seattle to tour our hallowed halls in San Marcos, CA. In our barrel room they were drawn to brandy barrels of Angel’s Share, port barrels of Serpent’s Stout and red wine barrels of Gift of the Magi with brett. There were others, but as with all blends, it’s best to leave some things to the imagination (or the taste buds for that matter).

On tap at Brouwer’s Cafe, pours black with a small tan head. Aroma is complex, with notes of balsamic vinegar, tart dark fruits, and wild yeast - very interesting nose profile. Flavour is along the same lines, with vinegar, wild yeasts, dark fruits, pitted fruits, and wood. Highly complex. A totally unique flavour profile with the yeasts and barrel aging after all this time. This has held up beautifully. Wonderful.

[2/28/15] Bottle sample at De Garde Brewing in Tillamook. Release and bottle share event. Murky brown. Sourish aroma with wine, bourbon, dark fruits and wood. Sourish-sweetish flavor with wine, bourbon and fruits. Medium-bodied.

750 ml bottle shared by phaleslu. Pours a dark copper/brown color with a large, but rapidly disappearing beige head. The aroma and flavor have big dark fruit character, tart, acidic, some spicy notes, wood, cherry, good carbonation (especially for LA), solid sour brown that is drinking nicely with the age.

750 ml bottle opened to celebrate the completion of my PhD. Gusher, but we didn’t lose much of it thanks to some quick thinking. Pours dark brown with tan head. Aroma is prunes, figs, dark fruit, mixed with honey and wine. Taste follows, with a hint of some kind of spiciness in there as well. Nice mix of rich, dark sweet fruits with a pleasant sourness. Full body with lively carbonation. One heck of a fine beer.

750ml bottle corked and caged poured a dark brown color with redish highlights. Aromas of sour dark fruit, prunes, and some wet wood. Flavors are the same sourness peels off the enamel on yoir teeth and sour dark fruits. Solid beer, thanks to Cleg! Cory knows how to throw it down!

UPDATED: JUL 8, 2013 Final beer of an amazing long weekend in Seattle and Portland, with ajax25g at the Schmidt castle south. Gusher. Brown color, massive tan head. Aroma of sweet and sour prunes, candied dates. Taste is softly sour dark fruit, early beginnings of port wine. Delicious.

Bottle (dregs)... This beer rocks!… Murky brown pour with a fizzy, khaki, short-lived head. Fragrance-wise, sour cherries and vanilla really stand out. Medium-body with airy carbonation. The flavor offers heaps of fruitiness, breadiness and tartness accompanied by an undercurrent of yeasty, tannic bitterness. Astringent, dry finish. Big-time thanks to 50belair for sharing this world class beer! To me, this is miles better than the 2008 Imagination saison.

Bottle. Dark brown pour with a tan head. Sour stone fruit aromas. The taste pretty much follows suit with pleasant tart and sour stone fruit highlights and woody vinous lowlights. A little over carbonated. Great mouthfeel, good body, and good balance. Outstanding. Thanks Ryan....

Bottle shared by phaleslu. Poured a hazy ruby color with an average frothy brown head that mostly lasted with excellent lacing. Moderate to heavy dark fruit, sour and wood aroma. Medium to full body with a sticky tingly texture and soft carbonation. Medium to heavy sour & sweet flavor with a medium to heavy sweet & sour finish of moderate to long duration. This is a standout beer for style.

So I opened this 750 ml bottle by twisting off the cage, and BANG - the cork shot up and hit the celing, prompting some shouts from bystanders at Fifty West Brewing in Cincinnati. Could this be a Lost Abbey beer? Is it just a mislabeled Saint Somewhere beer? Is it possible that thebaldwizard spent 2+ years shaking it before sending it to me, and it still hasn’t settled? Whatever the case, this was live. After some gushing, our pours were a deep, semi-hazed plum-amber color with a huge beige head that settled fairly quickly. Aroma of plum, vanilla, berries, oak, raisins, dates, and some fruity, musty funk. The flavor shows more sourness than the nose did, with berries, plums, funk, oak, vanilla, and light balsamic vinegar. Medium-bodied, with a tart, fruity, dry mouthfeel and moderate carbonation on the palate. Nice sour. Vinous, but not overly so. Drinking well now.
