4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
2nd batch bottle (’08?) shared w/ Maheu at Toronado SD. Inviting nose of a light bretty funk w/ a semi-sweet malt base filled w/ lemon. Flavor is not quite as sour as I was anticipating, although I have nothing to compare it to. In fact, this was fairly mellow & well rounded. Flavor was straightforward, bretty sour, lemon zest, citrus, smothered in wood, w/ a "semi" dry finish. Really delicate palate, soft as hell on the tongue...rolls over w/ ease. A really, really delicious, drinkable, and almost refreshing sour ale that stays tart. Their Veritas 004 offering blows this Cable Car batch away in terms of intensity, but it was still very well enjoyed.

750 ml bottle is 2007 vintage shared by ygtbsm94. Thanks Brad! Pours a hazy golden orange color with a small ring of bubbles clinging to the glass. Aroma is lemon citrus, barnyard funk, and light oak notes. Flavor is very complex: grapefruit and lemon citrusy sourness, puckering, balanced and quenching. Alcohol is well masked, thin to medium bodied, delicious. From notes 1/23/10 (Geist Dark Lord tasting)

Wild wild lemons and more lemons..very pleasing lemons and some grassy horse goat...sounds wierd but perfect balance with all these ingenious flavors. The lemons I love in the wild style ales...perfect for summer. Solid A

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
2008 Bottle at Toronado Pub, San Diego. Appearance is light golden peach. Aroma is mild sour with no real funk. Taste is low carbonation - close to perfection with the profile: very smooth, good level of acid, mild oaky quality. This IS NOT a fruit sour, just mild woodiness and sour. FInish is very tangy. Overall, a great sour - very well balanced and straight up Maybe nothing on the lambics, but very well done. Gets better as you attune to the lack of fruit and funk.

750 ml bottle
I was not expecting to get to try this despite visiting Toronado as it can be hard to get. When the wait staff asked me as I was closing the tab if I wanted a bottle it took exactly three seconds to say ’Yes’. I am glad too - this is a world class sour that put even the Almanac Bourbon Barrel Peche to shame.
Aroma / Appearance - A golden body shimmers with life and light peachy edges. Lemons, oak, and a lingering tartness give this an edge a bit stronger than the average sour but without being vinegary. it almost could be mistaken for a gueuze.
Flavor / Palate - Oak and lemon lightly play across the tongue. The tartness grows until crashing into sour waves on the back of the throat. Almost like a dry champagne it sparkles the entire time. This is one of those beers that everyone should get a chance to try and proves that Lost Abbey is still on top of their game.

2008 bottle thanks to Diego! Pours a cloudy orange with paperthin white head that diminishes to nothing. The aroma is strong funk, oak, lemon, and yeast. Thin mouthfeel with light sourness, oak, with lingering tart finish. Held up very well, so impressive.

Walked in to the tasting and this bottle was already open, waiting patiently for me and definitely beckoning. How’s that for the first beer of the tasting? Save the best for first! And as far as I was concerned, this was the best of show (though I got too drunk and had to leave before Duck Duck was opened, so who knows).
Anyhow, the aroma was a pretty quickly decided 10, for me. I started with not even an inch of glorious, clear, ruby liquid but even that yielded a bountiful, rich, very strong aroma of perfectly wedded sour acids. Acetic acid was gentle at this point and only added enough vinegar-like notes to punctuate the style while the malo-lactic portion was soft, rich and divine. Smelled like it had cherries jumping out of the glass. Tons of black pepper, cherry pit and very light vanilla. Bone dry tartness lingering. Wow, if this stuff smells this much like cherry, I wonder what the actual Kriek version is like...
Beautifully flavorful, as well, with a very dry, light body, leaving only traces of candied prunes and light caramel while the lactic acid and black pepper phenols do all the work. Hints of light base malt sweetness provides excellent balance and the beer seems neither overly/obnoxiously sour, nor lacking in any sour character. Really, really good and well worth the 3 to 4 hundred dollar price tag that I didnt have to pay ;) Thanks Adam! What a guy!
