toncatcher (200), Santee - SAN DIEGO, California, USA Feb 3, 2008 Updated: Feb 4, 2008 Sampled at the Lost Abbey Carnevale night and release party. Pours a cloudy orange not much head. Aroma of clove and spice, I was told there was no clove or spice just the Saison yeast. Whatever the case the aroma was excellent. Flavors of clove, spice, and banana.
red éric (1382), montréal, Quebec, Canada Aug 26, 2008 750ml bottle, honey gold color, with a fluffy white head, leaving laces, yeasty, spicy, fruity nose, with a floral hop bouquet accent, with some stewed apple, pear notes, with a mild citrusy, grapefruit leafiness, with a medium-bodied palate, a yeasty, fruity, citrusy character, with a lemon flowery hop grassiness, with a hint of spiciness, leading towards a citrus hop bittering finish. sneagrams3 (1388), St. Louis, Missouri, USA Aug 23, 2008 The Dan Journal #231. Tasted 8/20/08. 750ml cork and cage. Hazy with a golden hue. Moldy off-white head. Peppery aromas with notes of citrus and slightly vegetal. Lemony, perfumy and spicy. Medium bodied with a mild citrus flavor. Lemon and spicy. Peppery with a bitter hoppy finish. Solid base malt character. Good yeast. Nice crisp bitter hoppy finish. Tasty. brewandbbq (228), Manchester, New Hampshire, USA Aug 22, 2008 Pours sparkling clear gold, with a four inch head of dense, white foam. The froth takes several minutes to settle and theres plenty of webbed lacework.
Aromatics lead off with earthy honey notes, lemon pith, dried grass, and a hint of orangy citrus. Some husky malt character follows through as well as a crisp mineral nod.
Light bodied, crisp and snappy. The carbonation is a bit light for a saison.
A lemony tartness starts the pallet along with dried citrus zest, wet hay, cloves, and grapefruit seeds.
Light spicing follows through. Slight hints of cumin, coriander, and celery seed.
Finishes with some lingering lemony tartness, and plenty of earthy, grassy notes.
Tasty brew, but short of expectations form such a highly regarded brewery. Pretty tame for the style, and another Lost Abbey brew that’s short on carbonation.
DA (2389), Portland, Oregon City, Oregon, USA Aug 20, 2008 From the bottle. Pours orange/gold with a smooth white head. Hoppy nose, citrus and yeast. Dry and hoppy flavor, soft fruitiness of apricot leading to a bitter finish. BrotherGrendel (135), San Diego (La Jolla), California, USA Aug 17, 2008 Slightly cloudy light gold with a modest layer of creamy white foam that sustains well. Aroma is sweet grains, light citrus, pepper, spices, light fruits (bananas), and yeast. Flavor is initially pale malts, grains, and yeast with sweet pears and bananas, transitions to grassy hops and slightly acidic citrus, then onward to pepper, spices, and herbs with a drying, yeasty finish. Palate is fairly full with moderate-high carbonation. Overall, a good saison with a slight imbalance of spices and yeast, will revisit next year when Tomme tweaks the recipe.
