4.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bottle. It’s been a couple weeks now since this showed up at my door. I had pondered holding both bottles for a while but aspidites insisted that I pull one so I could try it fresh and enjoy the dry hopping, he’s never steered me wrong with anything beer related so what could I do?
The pour is murky and burnt copper in color with a persistent ivory head. The aroma is primarily malt and yeast with a sort of musty orange note. Bright hop character in the flavor with a nice brettiness not unlike a fresh Orval. I like where this is going...
The malt sweetness is very subdued and I refuse to believe the alcohol is 9.5 %, there’s only a touch in there. Everything seems to be balanced in this beer but its seems to be delicately balanced, if that makes any sense. If I were one to believe in tag lines for beer, I’d call this one the chandelier of beers. There’s also slight stone fruit notes. I don’t get the scores on this one; I think it’s awesome! To each their own, I guess. You can’t argue with anyone’s palate.

Ölföreningens julölsprovning 2014. Smak och doft av torkad frukt, citrus, honung, brunt socker, kryddig med toner av äpple. Lagom sötma, lätt syrlig, torr med fina smaker och efterbeska.

Refrigerated 75 cl brown bottle corked at capped 2013 poured into a Trappist glass. Hazy amber with small off-white head. Aroma is dark fruit, medium body, medium carbonation, and thin small-bubble lacing. Taste is rich caramel malt, some dark fruit, spice, yeasty, a little alcohol, and bitter hop finish. This was in the top 50 when I bought and has since dropped out of the top 50. Not that great.

At Cardinal Den Store Juleøl Testen 2014. Pours hazy orange. Very little aroma, some sherry. Very bitter with an unpleasant sherry twang. Too high carbonation.

Draft pour at mammoth. Pours a reddish color with a patchy, foam head. Dry, grainy aroma. Really dry flavor, with an empty finish. I suppose the beer isn’t so bad, but compared to the usual from these guys paired with my expectations, I’m a little disappointed. I’ll drink this again.
