COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
And so the Three Wise Men set out from the East bearing gifts of Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh. Along the Way, they followed a bright light. The Bible neglects to mention if they brought beer or not. Who goes crossing the desert without beer? How smart are we to believe these wise men were? Since Christmas is the season of gift giving more than receiving, please be a giver and share the Wisdom found in each and every bottle of our Gift of the Magi.

Hazy amber pour with small off white head. Aroma of fruit, spice, caramel, citrus and grapefruit. Taste of caramel, peach, toffee, lemon citrus, brett and touch of bitter hops. Lots going on in this one, sweet, sour, citrus, brett, and bitter. Interesting and good beer, alcohol well hidden.

bottle. Amber with one finger head. The description sounded awesome, but holy hell this is a harsh mess of flavors. Sweet, spicey, boozy, fruity and hoppy. Hugely disappointing. Brett doesn’t seem to have developed much, and between the hops, spices, the medicinal flavor, and the booziness, it’s a struggle to make my way through this. Definitely not getting easier as it warms, either.

Cloudy burnt orange color. Pours cloudy, burnt orange with a robust dark eggshell head. Nose is immediately malty and as the head slowly dissipates leaving no lacing, dried apricots emerge. A mix of light fruit and darker fruit are existent yet shrouded in the fog of malt. Yeasty undertones are detectable yet not prevalent. Mouth feel is viscous and chewy yet is cut by a relatively forceful carbonation. Initial hops not necessarily apparent on the nose hit the palate hard. The dried fruits apparent in the scent follow through behind the initial onslaught of hops. The maltiness of the nose does not necessarily carry through to the mouth. After taste is surprisingly light. A sticky hop onslaught.

UPDATED: MAR 6, 2014 750ml bottle. Pours a dark ruby red with a good-sized, beige head. Aroma is fairly sour, somewhat yeasty and caramelly, some stingy ethanol, dried fruit, spicy. Taste is caramelly, lots of caramel, some earthiness, lightly sour in the beginning. Caramel and ethanol dominate, Some spiciness as well as berries. Some oak and liquor-like characteristics: Oak-aged whisky or brandy. Strong, powerful, good carbonation. A bit of an odd one, not very pleasant really.

750 ml bottle into tulip glass, 2013 vintage. Pours very hazy deep ruby red color with a 2-3 finger fairly dense and rocky light khaki head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Spotty foamy lacing clings around the glass, with a large amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of big plum, pear, peach, apricot, apple, caramel, brown sugar, toast, clove, pepper, herbal, floral, grass, light mustiness, and yeast earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good balance and complexity of malt and fruity/spicy yeast ester notes; with good strength. Taste of big raisin, plum, apricot, pear, apple, caramel, brown sugar, clove, pepper, toast, herbal, floral, grass, light mustiness, and yeast earthiness. Lingering notes of raisin, plum, apricot, pear, apple, caramel, brown sugar, toast, clove, pepper, herbal, light mustiness, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice complexity of fruity/spicy yeast and malt flavors; with a great malt/yeast flavor balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. High carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a fairly slick, crisp, and moderately prickly mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a light warming present after the finish. Overall this is an excellent biere de garde style! All around great complexity and balance of fruity/spicy yeast and malt flavors; and very smooth and crisp to sip on for the big ABV. A very enjoyable offering.

On tap poured into a 4oz english tulip. Bubble gum and grape come through in the initial aromas with a hint of yeast. Some dried citrus, or maybe citrus rinds, along with raisin and biscuit come through as secondary notes as it settles. It pours a clear orange amber color with a thin orange-ish / yellow head that leaves a whole lot of lace. It’s a medium-high bitter beer with a medium sweetness as a secondary taste. The full bodied beer hits the tongue first with a bitter and sweet grapefruit rind. It’s a very lively carbonation that has a bit of a sticky quality to it. Some roast and toffee notes come through at the swallow and it leaves a dry but astringent finish. Grapefruit definitely lingers in the aftertaste.
