COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Five thousand years ago the Mayan Calendar last turned over. Since then, Nostradamus, The Book of Revelations and random Shaman have all prognosticated that mankind would meet a fateful end. Currently, our demise is scheduled for December 21, 2012 for it has been so decreed our world is about to end not in a Christian Judgment Day but rather a Mayan Apocalypse. Funny thing is, the Mayans don’t actually believe in the concept of an Apocalypse. We at The Lost Abbey didn’t want to miss an opportunity to update our original Judgment Day recipe to accompany us as we collide towards this impending Rapture. Like us, we’re pretty sure you can believe in dried Chiles, Cinnamon and Tamarind working well together in this beer. This means you can count on this little bottle of beer to help you survive this cultural Armageddon. Please pop the cork and enjoy this version. We’ve got you covered. See you on December 22nd wherever life may take us.

from Erzbierschof - very dark brown beer with a little beige foam left; very malty and nutty aroma, some wood presence; full-bodied; a bit fizzy and fairly bitter and long nutty woody and chocolatey finish; some lingering sweetness and alcohol presence

Pours a dark amber color with a indescribably huge caramel colored head that is as stubborn as any you’ve ever seen on a root beer float--and then some. Aromas of cola, Belgian spice, and a little sorghum. The mouthfeel is sort of pleasant. Lubricating around the edges with a carbonated center. When it gets first pulled into the mouth, I get the sense that the beer is going to be fun. Sort of presents like a decent quad. Then something happens. That flavor goes away, leaving a bitter alcohol flavor. A little bit of a burnt flavor then emerges. Not sure what they were trying to do with this one, but I’m going to guess it didn’t work out.

On tap at the brewery, served in a tasting glass. Pours clear mahogany with a tiny tan head that fades to a thin remnant and leaves a small amount of fine lace. On the nose there are sweet fruity notes, along with delicate spice, mostly tamarind, but some cinnamon as well. The flavour begins moderately sweet with raisins, figs and brown sugar, along with just a subtle hint of spice. The spice gradually grows through the middle but is never excessive. The finish is long and malty sweet with a hint of pepper. On the palate it is medium-full in body with a smooth milky texture and soft carbonation. Overall a beautiful spicy quad with very subtle spices. A little tripel-esque, very elegant. 2013-03-23

On tap at Lost Abbey. Dark thick head; nice lace. Subtle caramel, ripe plum, and vanilla with notes of exotic spice on the the nose. Surprisingly sweet up front which fades to a subtle kick and long spicy finish. Way more subtle than expected considering the two types of chili, cinnamon, and tamarind that went into the brewing process. Caramel and Far East spice in one gulp. Amazing.

Picked up tonight at Brewforia Meridian... A 4 finger brown head took forever to die back... nice lacing... the brew is a turbid dark dark dark brown. Nose is spicy with both cinnamon and chili and some Belgian phenols. Flavor is a little flimsy, the aromas are better... a bit of brown maltiness with the accompanying cinnamon and something that I guess is the tamarind.... chili flavor builds along with a little head. Belgian character is there, but a bit lost in the other flavors... could use more malt flavor IMO Body is light and is punctuated by a big carbonation. Decent brew... 3rd time I’ve had it... Doubt it will get better, but I like it and will buy a couple more for the cellar if I find them.
