A - pours dark almost opaque cola brown with orange highlights. High Espresso head that dissipates quickly, nice lacing. S - Belgian yeast up front, cinnamon, chili notes, ginger ale, figs, dried dark fruit, raisins. M - strong bodied, full sweet rich palate. Tangy and burn on the back of the throat. High carb. Lingering malty stickiness. T - Belgian yeasts strong at first taste. Dried dark fruits (prunes and raisins) brown sugar, cinnamon, chili spice in the palate. Figs, hint of chocolate, vegetal malts on the end. Hints of tangy raw cacao. O - quite good spiced quad. Complex and subtle, not as complex or as long lasting as the best of the rich Belgian quads. 3.7

4.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
May 4th, 2013 - The third gift here on the anniversary of Lost Abbey’s birth is the Mayan Apocalypse Judgment Day. While the body is dark, black and ominous (even in a relatively thin glass) the top is a bleached tan color, with a heavy mottled thickness. This tamps down the aroma, though I still detect a fresh, water nutty aroma, complemented by the botanical sweetness of sprouted malt and a tough of bitterness from cocoa powder. There might also be a bit of cooked bacon from a smoked ingredient. The flavor is massively more intense than the aroma. Here again bacon makes a welcome appearance, made drinkable by a malty layer. The blend is akin to a scotch ale, or whatever offspring would come out of the unholy union of scotch ale and a barley wine. It’s those deep, sweet caramel rich malts followed by the intense punctuation of cocoa nibs. As for the palate, it’s soft and pillowy, and brings a slew of other flavors to the surface: raisin, freshly Aeropressed coffee, teriyaki and a good punch of alcohol. It’s another incredible beer, and is the third knock out brew in a row.

Bottle at Craftheads. Yum. Aroma is porridge, sweetness, quad stuff, sweet maltiness, bit of fruit, no sign of the spice. Taste is great. Dubbel like beefiness, sweet, maybe a touch of spice at the end. Raisins. Good stuff. Classic quad with a spicy finish. Boozy at the end too.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours dark brown with no head. Aroma of dates, raisins, figs, milky chocolate, spices, butter scotch, ripe plums and syrup. You kinda know what this beer is about when you stick your nose into it. Taste has those same sweet notes with all the ripe fruits and the more syrupy notes behind. Also has some heat in the end. Kinda nice but maybe too much of a sipper due to the extremely sweetness - which gets a bit one-sided in the long run.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
37,5cl bottle. Pours dark brown, almost black with a tiny, brown head. Aroma has huge, dried fruity notes. Lots and lots of raisins, prunes, dates, figs and so on. Some alcohol, caramel malts and some milky chocolate here as well. Taste has dark roast, and corresponding bitterness, coffee, lots of "milka" chocolate, port wine, syrup, caramel and again lots of these dark, dried, overripe fruits. A bit of molasses as well. Medium-low carbonation and medium-full body. Fine beer, but gets exhausting in bigger amounts.

"#4500! Cin and peppers expected, tamarind was not. Totally cool, unique, and decadent unexpected treat. I like the base beer and this version was deeelicious. Low heat, all kinds of complexity, and sweetness..."
