COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Five thousand years ago the Mayan Calendar last turned over. Since then, Nostradamus, The Book of Revelations and random Shaman have all prognosticated that mankind would meet a fateful end. Currently, our demise is scheduled for December 21, 2012 for it has been so decreed our world is about to end not in a Christian Judgment Day but rather a Mayan Apocalypse. Funny thing is, the Mayans don’t actually believe in the concept of an Apocalypse. We at The Lost Abbey didn’t want to miss an opportunity to update our original Judgment Day recipe to accompany us as we collide towards this impending Rapture. Like us, we’re pretty sure you can believe in dried Chiles, Cinnamon and Tamarind working well together in this beer. This means you can count on this little bottle of beer to help you survive this cultural Armageddon. Please pop the cork and enjoy this version. We’ve got you covered. See you on December 22nd wherever life may take us.

Bottle, 375ml corked. A big, dark beige head forms over a clear-looking chestnug colored body. Dark chocolate, dark berries, prunes, some caramel and alcohol. Some light funky hints. Lots of flavor foo, with dried fruits, vinous hints, chocolate and caramel. Some bitterness too, stretching into the very end. Lasting vinous finish, with dried fruits and some chocolate notes. The chilies well hidden all the way. Wonderful. 130420

Bottle at Olympen, june 29th 2013. Deep mahogny brown body, beige head. Aroma of dark malts, raisins, pears, apricot, chocolate and pepper. Roasty and warm taste, dark fruits, cocoa, plums, raisins and alcohol. Good complexity, good body and nice spicy feel to it all. Aftertaste of orange, chocolate and pepper. This is a clever brew!

12.7. Fl. Oz. Bottle. Pours dark brown, with cream head. Aroma licorice, raisin, roasty, coffee, cinnamon, chocolate, dark fruits, malts. Taste full rich sweet, followed by a dark choco hoppy bitter. There is long dark aftertaste. Mouth-feel full creamy, oily, tinteling carbo. Wow awesome beer, complex nose and great taste. Maybe bit unbalanced but doesn’t hurt the beer.

"#4500! Cin and peppers expected, tamarind was not. Totally cool, unique, and decadent unexpected treat. I like the base beer and this version was deeelicious. Low heat, all kinds of complexity, and sweetness..."

12.7 oz corked and caged bottle. Pours dark brown with a medium beige head with good retention. Aroma is predominant caramel with some underlying dark fruit, banana and cinnamon. Taste is sweet and savory with some tartness and a hint of bitterness in the finish; quite a bit of alcoholic heat in the finish, too. Bit of a banana flavor. I don’t detect any chilies, sadly. I was looking forward to a spicy beer, dammit! Quality beer, but it’s not what I was expecting. I guess I was expecting something more apocalyptic.

Pour out of 375 mL bottle, bottle opened with a loud pop, lots of carbonation. Dark reddish black pour with nice fluffy and large tan head, aroma brought notes of vanilla, dark fruits, plums, chilis, hints of cinnamon, ginger, touch of raisin, slight earthy notes. Taste is a nice mix of sweet vanilla, caramel, bready, like bread pudding almost with a creamy note, nice cinnamon, slight chili, ginger, hints of earth, grain, finishing fairly sweet, but dries out, carbonated well, finishing with some more dark fruits and sweet raisin. This is well done and very well balanced.

The pour is a deep, dark murky maroon with a moderate, foamy, frothy, pale tan head with is fully lasting leaving nice froth and similar lace. The nose is very nice with cinnamon and peppery spice noted, burnt caramel, rum-soaked raisins, English toffee, and candied dates. The flavor is much of the same still some dry, peppery, cinnamon notes, toffee, candied dates, molasses, light banana bread, and lighter raisins. The palate is nice with a full body, more than moderate carbonation, drying and chewy mouthfeel. The finish is more dry with still the cinnamon, light pepper, molasses, raisins, and some candied dates. Using the Mexican spices did add a completely different approach to the style with the dryness and spice, but I found it less enjoyable to drink than the original. Still a nice beer from an incredible brewery.
