COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Five thousand years ago the Mayan Calendar last turned over. Since then, Nostradamus, The Book of Revelations and random Shaman have all prognosticated that mankind would meet a fateful end. Currently, our demise is scheduled for December 21, 2012 for it has been so decreed our world is about to end not in a Christian Judgment Day but rather a Mayan Apocalypse. Funny thing is, the Mayans don’t actually believe in the concept of an Apocalypse. We at The Lost Abbey didn’t want to miss an opportunity to update our original Judgment Day recipe to accompany us as we collide towards this impending Rapture. Like us, we’re pretty sure you can believe in dried Chiles, Cinnamon and Tamarind working well together in this beer. This means you can count on this little bottle of beer to help you survive this cultural Armageddon. Please pop the cork and enjoy this version. We’ve got you covered. See you on December 22nd wherever life may take us.

375 ml bottle purchased at Holiday Wine Cellar just over a year ago just prior to the supposed Mayan Apocalypse in December 2012 ($5.99). Pours a dark brown with lots of red mixed in. The two fingers of brown-ish foam has a very cola-like effervescence that quickly dissipates. AROMA of rich toffee, sticky caramel, toasted nutty malts, some dark fruitiness, but little of the Mayan adjuncts with the possible exception of the cinnamon. FLAVOR of dark roasted malts (notes of dark chocolate, cereal, and roasted nuts), dark caramel, and somewhat weak but still perceptible "Mexican / Mayan" elements: chili heat, dry cinnamon, and a little sticky sweet-sour tamarind. Lightly sweet like the normal Judgment Day. Finishes with chocolate and a hint of smoke. As with the regular version, the great big ABV is generally well concealed. Good effort, but would have liked to see more of the adjuncts which might have mixed well with the base quad. (214, 841)

(Rating #5574)

Bottle. Pours with a nice pop, medium size and mostly retentive tan head over an extremely deep brown, near black hues body. Aromas are of dried peppers, chocolate, toffee, cinnamon and lots of dark fruit. Dry, nearly roasty with thr peppers. Rich, boozy as well. Complex. Flavors are of flan, toffee, creme brûlée, chocolate, vinous, leather, raisins, dark fruits. Malty with many dark fruit esters and light burn. Lively carbonation, low burn, dark chocolate, well hidden alcohol. Tasty.

Dark brown pour, tan head, moderate retention. Aroma is Belgian-esters, spice (cinnamon and cloves), dark fruit. Taste is quite spicy, hint of chiles at the end in the back of the throat. Lively carb, slick mouthfeel. Taste lingers nicely. Overall: I haven't had the regular judgment day, but this is nice. The hint of spice is cool - without it I'm not sure I'd be able to distinguish it from other good quads. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

375mL from Bine&Vine. Murky, muddy, deep brune pour. Towering dark tan head. Big bubbles, okay retention. Nose is pretty nice milk chocolate, hot cocoa, muted nutmeg/allspice, sweet/spicy tamarind (this time tamarind is actually in the beer...a first?). Very nice. Taste is dense, yeasty, filling with spices, alcohol, more alcohol...almost flavored vodka like booziness...made me shake with near gag reflex after notes of vodka surfaced. I took way too big of a swig..this is a sipper. Ok, now it is tolerable with dark rum, semisweet chocolate, spiked egg nog. Palate is dense, powdery, some silkiness. Overall a bit yeasty/muddy with some spicy chocolate dessert flavors that work better than just the dark cherry character of normal Judgment Day. I enjoyed it. Let it warm and the Abbey Quadrupel notes come into play- chocolate, yeast, sweet alcohol warming. On style even with all the adjuncts.

Bottle. Pours a dark, murky brown with a uniform paper-thin khaki head. Raisins and cocoa dominate the nose with a touch of dry ancho. Taste of cinnamon, unsweetened chocolate, some molasses, and the faintest note of chile (mainly poblano) spiciness. Smooth palate overall, though there’s an odd dryness in the middle and a pleasant tingling on the tongue courtesy of the cinnamon and spices. Solid beer, but the additions don’t really make it that much more distinct from Judgment Day.

Aroma is thick with heavy red fruits, some cinnamon and light cocoa. Spices and yeast are all over this one. Very thick aromas. Pour is reddish with a nice brown head. There are a ton of spices in the flavor, with some yeast and light alcohol notes. Tamarind comes out a bit in this brew as it warms up. Very bold brew. Good stuff.

Corked bottle, courtesy of mcberko
Dark brown color, almost black, with medium sized creamy head.
Mild aroma I roasted malt and spices, some pepper. High carbonation, good flavor of roasted malts and dark chocolate, lean in the beginning rounder later, with pleasant piquant spiciness.
It gets better given some time to settle an oxygenate. Very good.

Appearance was hazy brown with creamy lasting tannish 1/2 head, no lacing. Aromas are sweet malts, spices , chilis, funky yeasty bready thing going on. Taste are funky yeasts, touches of sweet deep malts, raisin, plum, cinnamon, chili heat. Palate was soft creamy CO2 with full body, then fruity lasting warming alcoholic yeasty finish. Different brew...

Bottle pours very dark brown with a huge tan root beer float head. Aroma dark fruits and Belgian yeasts with cinnamon and chiles. Taste dark fruits with some roast, then the spices move in with chocolate, cinnamon, chiles and coriander. Finish slight bitterness. palate full with alcohol and chile burn.

Interesting beer but more of a novelty than something I’d want very often.
