3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 Thorpe429 (3526) - Alexandria, Virginia, USA - FEB 4, 2012
Thanks to G311 for this bottle. Served in a Lost Abbey Rastal tulip.
Pours a semi-hazed dark apricot color with a large, foamy white head and a good bit of lacing on the way down. The nose brings forward a bit of stone fruit plus some light spice. Hints of grain. Flavor has a good dosing of fruit and light spice. Light-medium body with good carbonation and a crisp finish. Nice beer.
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 BartC (513) - Lichtaart, BELGIUM - FEB 4, 2012
Bottle. High carbonated blond beer with a huge creamy white head. Grassy, herbal nose and taste. Fairly bitter and dry. Brilliant Saison!
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 RasmusOtt (705) - Aalborg, DENMARK - JAN 20, 2012
Pours clear golden amber with a white head. Aroma is sweet pear, apple, orange, grassy notes, a light spicy feel to it, hay and sweeter citrus fruits. Taste is pear, red apples, a weak note of coriander, weak pine, very dry, a herbal kind of bitterns, saisonish yeasty feel and some citrus fruits here aswell.
3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 arminjewell (2442) - Parker, Colorado, USA - JAN 18, 2012
Pour out of 750 mL bottle into snifter, big big frothy white head, hazy dirty orange in the glass. Aroma brings notes of chalk, lemon, some slight tart, funky notes, hints of slight white fruit, touch of grape, peach and apricot notes, slight touch of earth. Taste brings notes of fizzy orange, lemon, grape, some pear and peach notes, slight hints of biscuit and some grass, but pretty sweet with no spice to back it up. Maybe a slight tart/funky note, but not much other than fruity notes.
3.2 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 FROTHINGSLOSH (3204) - GREENSBURG, Pennsylvania, USA - JAN 8, 2012
A solid if uninspired Saison. +++ Sampled from a 750 ml corked brown bottle this beer poured a hazy yellow color with a large foamy white head that faded quickly and left decent lacing. The aroma was faintly dusty citrus and chalk. The flavor was tart and tangy citrus with a touch of must, dust and bread. The finish was medium length tart lemon. Medium body. Ok.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 otakuden (1490) - Vero Beach, USA - NOV 30, 2011
Appearance: hay and straw shines under a voluminous white head – solid, thick, cakey, and pockmarked with random bubbles. Fades level and creamy, leaving a full circle of lace in its wake.
Nose: yeast, lemon, green banana peel, white pepper. Guava and papaya, coconut milk. Spearmint and ferns, rosemary. Cumin.
Palate: cumin and white pepper come to the forefront, leading into herbs, spearmint, rosemary, and thyme. Peppercorn finish tingles atop the tongue. Rustic oak. Lemongrass. Tropical fruit peels grab the back of each swallow – guava, papaya, and coconut husk. Greenhouse breath of flowers, pollen, greenery, and plant life. Haystacks and dried straw. Floral throughout. Of the harvest.
Final Thoughts: wow and wow. I love me some Saison and while Belgium still reigns high, the Red Barn Ale from Port Brewing/Lost Abbey did fine justice to this rustic farmhouse ale legend. Delicious.
