COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This Farmhouse Ale traces its roots to the small rustic breweries of Southern Belgium. The word Saison comes to us from the French language and it means Season. Lightly spiced with Organic Ginger, Orange Peels, Black Pepper and Grains of Paradise, this brew promises to quench your thirst on the hottest Southern California days or wherever your travels may take you. Available in 750 ml bottles and on draft at select inspired locations.

Editor's note. This is a new incarnation of SPF 45, previously brewed at Pizza Port Solana Beach

UPDATED: MAY 7, 2014 Bottle: Two years old. Cork comes out silent, yay. Honey gold body, some stray bubbles rising to the top but there’s no head on this one. Looks flat & rather oily. Just how I like my saisons. Aroma of hay, phenols, peppery yeast, spicy ginger & clove with a very faint hint of orange zest & mint leaf on the back-end. Taste is heavier on the white pepper-y, phenolic spice. Perhaps more clove/mint, brash yeast, bread, leading to a moderately floral & spicy finish. Finished dry, but the mouth feel is a flat let down... This would be a really nice beer if it were properly carbonated. Otherwise, it’s just decent & the flat mouth feel doesn’t allow the flavors to pop like they should. Distracting.

Tap at Lost Abbey/Port tasting room, 18/04/14. Clear golden with a moderate off white covering/swirl. Nose carries Belgian yeast notes, straw, citric peel, candied orange, light smoke. Taste comprises tangy fruit, lemon rind, bitter orange, straw, spice, yeast eters. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Ok saison, nothing overly exciting, a little over Beglian’ed in terms of the yeast presence.

Slightly hazy light golden under a thin and persistent foam head. The nose bursts with a delightful yeasty dough tone and lots of pepper and mango and bubblegum. Big flavor with woodsy yeast esters, light dust, pilsner and blonde grain malt, sweet lemongrass, white pepper, and a bit of sweet dough. Complex and tasty for sure. Well balanced.

Pours cloudy apricot with a medium frothy white head. Aroma is honey, funk, apricot, lemon, herbal notes. Taste is apricot, citrus, herbs, honey, rye bread. Moithfeel is very sprightly with high carbonation. Aftertaste is funk and apricot. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Goldenrod, white head. Melon, sweet, grassy. Some clove. Nice upfront bitterness upfront, then some very nice interesting sweeter malt notes. Medium light body, medium carbonation, longer finish. Really pleasant. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

2014 bottle to a tulip glass. Pours a hazy lemon yellow with a highly carbonated head that takes a while to recede into a creamy dollop. Aroma is slightly pungent with a vinegar-like sourness, bread, barnyard and sweet citrus. No vinegar in the taste. Bread, earthy herbal spiciness, and a kind if anise-like bitterness. A medium mouthfeel with a bit of a burn and high carbonation. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

A hazy gold color with a big white head that settles to a dollop and leaves good lacing. Aroma has a hint of vinegar along with some cracker malt and spices, including pepper. Taste has none of the vinegar that was in the aroma. Apricots and pears along with the cracker malt and a big peppery and spicy finish. Finishes mostly dry. Medium bodied with med/high carbonation. Nice saison with big pepper and spices. Not my favorite but would drink again.
