COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Perhaps no country embraces the use of fruit in beers more so than Belgium. Numerous traditional as well as regional specialty ales are infused with every sort of fruit imaginable. In this way, the flavor of the fruit becomes especially prominent. Red Poppy Ale is a veritable celebration of Sour Cherries in an explosion of aromas and tastes. Brewed from a brown ale base and aged in our oak barrels for over 6 months, this beer is not for the faint of heart. The Golden Poppy is the state flower of California and the Red Poppy is found in Flanders Fields where our inspiration for this beer comes from.

Poured from a 375ml corked and caged bottle into a Spiegelau tulip. Appearance: Pours a deep mahogany brown with cherry red highlights, a little bit of gold around the edges and a little bit of sediment floating around.Features a thick, bubbly light tan head which sticks around for a while. Decent lacing. Smell: Tart cherries, wine grape hulls, sweet oak and vinegar and a touch of funk. Taste: Wine grape hulls and tart cherries up front followed by a smooth oaky sweetness in the middle before ending with more tartness and just a hint of funky notes at the finish. Aftertaste is a mix of bitter grape hulls, oak and funk. Very well-balanced. Mouthfeel: Light-to-medium-bodied with a high amount of prickly carbonation. The tartness, while not really puckering, coats the mouth in a film - in a good way. Drinkability: Excellent drinkability. This is very enjoyable. I just wish I had more. Overall: Excellent beer overall. This is about as good as it gets as far as Flanders Reds go. If you see it, buy it. Yes, it’s pricey, but it doesn’t disappoint.

On tap at Harry’s Hofbrau in Redwood City, CA. Aroma is initially tart, underripe fruit but warms to some funky, musty oak notes. Taste is oaky, dry, tart and musty cherries. Very funky / mineral / oaky component. Really enjoyed how funky this was but was hoping for a touch more fruit sweetness.

Bottle at home. Hazy dark ruby with a thin beige head. Complex notes of cherries, wild funk, mould, caramel, vanilla, oak barrel, minerals and subtle sulphur. Medium tartness, slight saltiness and a low amount of sweetness. With high carbonation and a smooth, oily texture, it makes for a refreshing drink.

A corked 0.375l bottle from Ølbutikken. Had to struggle a bit to get the cork out of this, but when I did, it pours a deep dark dark amber colored thing, really cloudy and it has a wonderful looking fluffy everlasting dark beige top that is leaving nice lacing down the sides of the glass. Lovely tart nose, lots of berries and a soft velvety red vine vinegar. Also small notes of sour lime zest, wood, some mild form of sesame oil, sour raspberries and sour cherries? The aroma is lovely complex. Oh, it’s even more sour the the aroma led me to believe. Somewhat thin on the mouthfeel with a just above average carbonation level. Lots of sour berries here, watered down lime zest, acidic not ripe green gooseberries and yeah, red softly sour cherries. It’s really delicate this lille thing! Can’t remember that I’ve had something quite like this before really. Tasty and so refreshing! Imagine having something like this widely available... 09.05.2013

Dont understand the hype. Other - Belgian - breweries produce the same type of beer with better results. Fairly flat, not very tart...
