COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Perhaps no country embraces the use of fruit in beers more so than Belgium. Numerous traditional as well as regional specialty ales are infused with every sort of fruit imaginable. In this way, the flavor of the fruit becomes especially prominent. Red Poppy Ale is a veritable celebration of Sour Cherries in an explosion of aromas and tastes. Brewed from a brown ale base and aged in our oak barrels for over 6 months, this beer is not for the faint of heart. The Golden Poppy is the state flower of California and the Red Poppy is found in Flanders Fields where our inspiration for this beer comes from.

Poured from a 375ml corked and caged bottle into a Spiegelau tulip. Appearance: Pours a deep mahogany brown with cherry red highlights, a little bit of gold around the edges and a little bit of sediment floating around.Features a thick, bubbly light tan head which sticks around for a while. Decent lacing. Smell: Tart cherries, wine grape hulls, sweet oak and vinegar and a touch of funk. Taste: Wine grape hulls and tart cherries up front followed by a smooth oaky sweetness in the middle before ending with more tartness and just a hint of funky notes at the finish. Aftertaste is a mix of bitter grape hulls, oak and funk. Very well-balanced. Mouthfeel: Light-to-medium-bodied with a high amount of prickly carbonation. The tartness, while not really puckering, coats the mouth in a film - in a good way. Drinkability: Excellent drinkability. This is very enjoyable. I just wish I had more. Overall: Excellent beer overall. This is about as good as it gets as far as Flanders Reds go. If you see it, buy it. Yes, it’s pricey, but it doesn’t disappoint.

UPDATED: MAY 10, 2013 Thanks to my boy Martin for sending me this! Brown pour, lots of sourness/cherries on the nose. Taste is vinegar, and a whack load of sour cherry goodness. Great stuff

Brown pour... Sour cherries, vinegar. Highly acidic, moderately sour. Mild oakiness, tartness, cherry. Super expensive.

Pours mahogany with little head but an apparent carbonation. Nose is vinegar and metal, with the cherries only faintly discernible. Flavor is intense, with lots of acidity from balsamic vinegar flavors, sour cherries, and candied fruits. The cost of this beer on the East Coast is astronomical, and for the money I will generally stick with Rodenbach Grand Cru, but this is certainly something worth trying.

Pours deep reddish brown with a nice sized white head that sticks around leaving a layer of bubbles floating atop this brew the entire time. Aromas of sweet cherries, baking spices and some light vinegar. Flavors are tart cherry, bread notes, some butter characteristics, light funk and a sweetish apple finish. This is heavier in body than I would expect for a 5% ABV beer but it also lacks some of the usual sour/wild ale carbonation. Overall, I have loved this beer since a friend shared a bottle with me, the only thing holding me back from drinking more is the price tag.

Big thanks to Peter. Pours cloudy brown with traces of sediment and a little foam. Lots of sour cherry on nose. Average carbonation. Finishes sour and tangy. Sticky consistency with load of nice sour apricot or plum finish. Well balanced, all around pleasure.

Pours a murky brown, small tan head. Tart, darn fruit aromas that only hint at cherries. Great acetic tartness with a slightly roasty character. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours medium brown with burgundy undertone with an off-white head that vanishes quickly. Aroma of vinegar and cherry. Tart cherry flavor with hint of wood flavor-sour with barnyard funk. Just delicious!
