Commercial Description:
Perhaps no country embraces the use of fruit in beers more so than Belgium. Numerous traditional as well as regional specialty ales are infused with every sort of fruit imaginable. In this way, the flavor of the fruit becomes especially prominent. Red Poppy Ale is a veritable celebration of Sour Cherries in an explosion of aromas and tastes. Brewed from a brown ale base and aged in our oak barrels for over 6 months, this beer is not for the faint of heart. The Golden Poppy is the state flower of California and the Red Poppy is found in Flanders Fields where our inspiration for this beer comes from.

Unlabeled 375ml at a private dinner with the Lost Abbey crew. Thanks! Pours light brown with no head. Bottle had not conditioned yet so there was no carbonation. Sour cherry aroma dominated by oak and brett. I smelled this one for 20 minutes before tasting. WOW! Nice tart taste with a slight sweet background flavor. The Dawn patrol is showing through. Light candy sugar plays well with the sour cherries. Thick mouthfeel holds up well even without the carbonation. This is one amazing beer that will hold it’s own for years to come. After being told this was the same recipe as Le Woody Brune, I am amazed at how well this turned out. I am glad to have a few bottles to stash away for a few years.

Zeeland 08’ tasting. The sours just kept on coming. And no, I’m not complaining. And yes, those burgers and pickle spears were delicious. anyways, to the beer. Poured a murky red brown. Aroma was nice funk, sour cherries, bit of sweetness. Taste was much the same, well balanced and very drinkable. nice smooth finish. Again, this didn’t not my socks off, but it was very enjoyable.

G.A.B.F. 2008: Pours a muddy maroon with a creamy tan head. The aroma is funky and infected- lots of oak, brie cheese sharpness, underlying maple and vanilla, a subtle raisin-like quality. The flavor is a drop less sour than the aroma suggests. Has a lactic acidity upfront, with a green apple skin note, plummy/toasted malt undertones and a solid toasted malt presence throughout. Complex, delicious, probably the best beer of the fest! I need a bottle!

Sample at J Gumbos Aug 2008 Indy tasting - Aroma is sweet and sour, cherry, red wine and oak. Flavor matches but is more sour than sweet. Palate is dry and tart. Very nice. Word at the tasting was that it is already fading.... it was better?

Bottle. Mahogony beer with a light tan head. Cherry, tart aroma with some barrel notes. Tart cherry flavor with oak and earth. Medium bodied. Tart cherry lingers with oak and malt. Balanced tartness - could use a bit more acetic notes.

Sampled from a bottle at the brewery for RBSG 08. Pours a hazy amber-brown with a tan ring. Huge sour cherry aroma, with sweeter malt. Taste has a lot of cherry, both sweet and sour. Lingering tart cherry flavors. Very tasty, but I was hoping for more.
