COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Perhaps no country embraces the use of fruit in beers more so than Belgium. Numerous traditional as well as regional specialty ales are infused with every sort of fruit imaginable. In this way, the flavor of the fruit becomes especially prominent. Red Poppy Ale is a veritable celebration of Sour Cherries in an explosion of aromas and tastes. Brewed from a brown ale base and aged in our oak barrels for over 6 months, this beer is not for the faint of heart. The Golden Poppy is the state flower of California and the Red Poppy is found in Flanders Fields where our inspiration for this beer comes from.

Had on tap at Stone Sour Fest 2010. Easily one of my favorite Lost Abbey beers. The Red Poppy pours with a deep brownish-red color and slight tan head. Aroma of cherries, oak, lactic acid, vinegar, and citrus. Taste is equally complex with the cherries being the dominant flavor with the citrus and acids backing it up. Well balanced, finishes nicely, a true gem from Lost Abbey.

Cloudy light brown color with thin white head. Musty oaky aroma with a hint of whisky. Sour tart palate with subtle fruit flavor. Hard to tell its cherry with any certainty. Initial taste reminds me of a Belgian lambic. Finish has of mellow bourbon flavor with notes of Vanilla To find an American sour is rare and bourbon barrel though rising in poPularity is -still relatively rare but to find a barrel aged sour (two of my favorites) is a beer lovers holy grail.

Bottle. Pours dark red/ruby with a good off-white head, some retention, no lace. Aroma of cherries, oak, brown sugar, funk. Taste is tart, sour, cherries, oak, vinegar, with a slight sweetness. Palate is soft, slick, high carbonation. Very nice, but when opened with supplication did not compare.

Bottle from Nugget. Aroma and flavor of tart cherries, light brown sugar, and was refreshingly dry. Wonderfully made beer, but I also don’t get the pricetag. Great beer.

Bottle. Pours a nice dark ruby red color with a beige head. Aroma is sour with lots of cherries, balsamic vinegar, brown sugar, dark fruits, caramel and some red apple and subtle funk. Flavor follows the nose with lots of sour cherries, balsamic vinegar, subtle funk, oak, dark fruits, caramel, brown sugar and red apple notes. The body is medium with a dry mouthfeel. Overall a really nice American Sour!

Poured into tulip, finger of off white head. Sediment is at the bottom. Smell is tart and balanced. Taste is strong cherry. Sour, almost bitter. Candied, almost. Very smooth and balanced. Sits on the tongue quite well. Very well done, but I don’t think it’s worth the price tag.

Tap/Growler from the 2011 RBWG and a 2 yr old bottle-pours dark red with a fizzy off-white head. nose is different between the two-the tap had more vinegar/bright lactic sourness whereas the bottle aged version has more of a cherry currant note to it. both were great noses. flavors are very sour-lots of cherrries, toasted wood (oak), vineous, vinegar, plums, with tons of puckering sweetness on the finish. This is a very sour beer if you ask me. With that said, its very tasty and is good fresh or aged. Body is lite and crisp with ample carbonation. i think the fresh tap version was a bit more sour than this 2 yr old bottle. regardless, a very solid american example of this style.
