Commercial Description:
Perhaps no country embraces the use of fruit in beers more so than Belgium. Numerous traditional as well as regional specialty ales are infused with every sort of fruit imaginable. In this way, the flavor of the fruit becomes especially prominent. Red Poppy Ale is a veritable celebration of Sour Cherries in an explosion of aromas and tastes. Brewed from a brown ale base and aged in our oak barrels for over 6 months, this beer is not for the faint of heart. The Golden Poppy is the state flower of California and the Red Poppy is found in Flanders Fields where our inspiration for this beer comes from.

Muddy brown pour with a thin white head. Aroma had plenty of cherry and oak. Flavor was up front oak, tannins, caramel, and cherry. Medium acidity, lightly carbonated. I like this one quite a bit. Thanks JW77!

Sample at J Gumbos Aug 2008 Indy tasting - Aroma is sweet and sour, cherry, red wine and oak. Flavor matches but is more sour than sweet. Palate is dry and tart. Very nice. Word at the tasting was that it is already fading.... it was better?

Bottle. Mahogony beer with a light tan head. Cherry, tart aroma with some barrel notes. Tart cherry flavor with oak and earth. Medium bodied. Tart cherry lingers with oak and malt. Balanced tartness - could use a bit more acetic notes.

Sampled from a bottle at the brewery for RBSG 08. Pours a hazy amber-brown with a tan ring. Huge sour cherry aroma, with sweeter malt. Taste has a lot of cherry, both sweet and sour. Lingering tart cherry flavors. Very tasty, but I was hoping for more.

The poured murky burnt red to brown in color with a very thin head that dissipated pretty quickly. The nose showed some funk along with red fruit and spice (cinnamon, pepper). In the mouth it was tart and dirty showing more funk than the nose would suggest along with less fruit. There was a distinct bitterness that began in the midpalate and lingers on. The acidity in the midpalate was very well integrated and overall the midpalate was well balanced but gave way to the bitterness in the finish.

Hazy dark amber with medium beige head. Sour aroma with toasted malt, wood, caramel and cherry notes. Sweet and sour flavor with cherries, caramel, malty and wood notes. Complex and refreshing. Nice!
