4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
2009 vintage, draft at Bavarian Lodge. Black stout in a small goblet with a short, but persistent tan head. The smell is very creamy, and invites deep inhalation. Really, really big on chocolate, and some coffee bitterness. Some background of vanilla. The beer menu did not imply this was one of the barrel aged versions, but it sure could have been. I have definite notes of oak and brandy-vanilla. Warming alcohol in Kahlua form. Some bits of tarty fruit toward the end, as Iím checking out a taster of New Belgium Clutch at the same time (see my next rating).

Pours black with a low mocha head. Aroma is fantastic: cacao nibs, dark chocolate, caramel, vanilla, muscovado sugar, honey, dark red berries. Taste is roasted malts, cocoa nibs, honey, nutmeg, muscovado sugar, vanilla. Mouthfeel is creamy and full-bodied. Very nice indeed!

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle: thanks, Jim! Big, black body with a nice, light mocha head. Aroma has nice, rolling malt with sweet cocoa & molasses, light cream, some roasted malt, & a nice, underlying nuttiness. Taste is very smooth & creamy; notes of sweet fudge, brown sugar, sweet cream, mild lactose, some faint dark raisins, & some dry coffee bean. Finish both lightly bitter & full of sweet, burnt brown sugar. Lovely stout.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours black with excessive mocha head and residual spotty lace. Smells of oats, hops, coffee and cocoa. A bit resiny for my tastes, reminds me of young 10/50. Chocolate, leather and tobacco come into the flavor profile and ride across the cavity. Nice earthy aftertaste. Medium on thin bodied for the style with hi carb and an off dry finish. Overall nice beer, needs tweaks in the mouthfeel department, but thatís par for the coarse there in San Marcos.

Bottle. Black with a medium sized diminishing dark brown head. Good lacing. Heavy coffee, chalk, burnt malt, chalk. Medium body, oily texture, medium carbonation. Medium/heavy sweet with little bitterness. Fine, but the rating seems a bit high.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours good old black with the good old dark brown head. Aroma is pretty burned with chocolate and soy. Taste is sweet and with nice licorice, but it is still dry in a wooden way. Quite carbonated.

4.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
Dark, murky brown body with a medium, quickly diminishing brown head. Very dense, quite bitter aroma of roasted coffee, wood, mint, some vanilla, dark chocolate. Incredibly smooth, velvet like palate. Excellent, exquisitely balanced flavour with dark chocolate, hazelnuts, thyme honey. An extraordinary beer.
