vyvvy (1582), Hazelwood, Missouri, USA Apr 19, 2008 Thanks to xmarcnolanx for sharing this highly regarding beer. Pours very dark brown with a nice tan head. The aroma has a ton of oak, only a hint of whiskey to me (marc apparently felt differently), dark caramel and some vanilla. Medium / full body that seems lighter than what was expected and lots of sharp carbonation. The flavor starts with grainy oakiness, brown sugar, toffee, dark caramel, heavily toasted malt and some definite alcohol. the finish has quite a bit of bite with citric traits and sharpness. There seem to be some hops showing through as well. Very nice beer.
decaturstevo (1138), decatur, Tennessee, USA Jul 21, 2008 btl opened by JohnC.Light brown pour with a tan head and lace. Pepper, bourbon, hard raisin. Excellent finishing bitter. Carbonation and mouthfeel excellent. All round rocker. Though the bourbon comes through the abv is carried very well. vadersnightcap (79), Scotland Jul 21, 2008 Absolutely amazing.
Well apart form the carbonisation level but this is so good you djust dont care - just leave er in the glass and savour her a little longer.
Aroma is burnt coffee beans lingering over railway sleepers covered in bitter chocolate with some lovely tart fruit.
Amazing caramel and toffee malt flavours on the pallet - almost a coca-cola caramel sweetness. this soon dissipates as the barrel and hops take over. Taosty bourban favours and bitter fruit from the hops.
amazing body and mouthfeel.
I love this!
KingpinIPA (815), Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA Jul 18, 2008 Bottle via dchmela. Dark, reddish, purple color. Smell of dark fruit, caramel, vanilla, oak, bourbon, alcohol, malt, brown sugar, nuts and hops. Taste of bourbon, oak, caramel, prunes, hops, vanilla, alcohol, raisins, touch of chocolate and nuts. Wonderful brew. I wish I had a bigger bottle. heemer77 (3611), Savannah, Missouri, USA Jul 17, 2008 Black body with a medium tan head. The aroma has some tobacco and oak. Some hints of pears and caramel. The taste is fairly sweet with caramel and some leather. There is also a little bit of pears and some notes of vanilla. A nice woody note helps to make this interesting. A good beer, but far from mind blowing. Sham (1846), Seattle, Washington, USA Jul 17, 2008 Bottle gushed all over my lap. Deep mahogany in color with a tan, foamy head. Stringy lacing. Lots of vanilla and alcohol, mostly bourbon. Toffee or caramel come out in the malts. Bitter and a bit acrid from the alcohol. There is a big note of brown sugar that comes out in the flavor. Raisins mix in with the vanilla. Creamy, and full bodied with a finish that is just as complex as the rest of the beer. Delicious.
