Skinnyviking (4142), Copenhagen, Denmark May 2, 2009 Draught. Low or in fact no head. Pitch black body. Powerful roasted barley malt coffee liquorice aroma. and flavor with subdued alcohol notes, low carbonation and a nice long aftertaste. Defreni (994), Frederiksberg, Denmark Apr 30, 2009 Fad: Brandy-barrel. Fantastisk duft af karamel. Mørkebrun øl uden skum. Ikke meget karbonering. Karamellen er gennemtrængende og fungere godt med cognac smagen. Fantastisk øl. markwise (1132), 15 Minutes from Kuhnhenn in, Florida, USA Apr 29, 2009 Thanks retorp for the share of this 08 bottle. Pours dark brown with no head whatsoever. Smells like heaven- chocolate, brandy, booze, vanilla, oak, caramel, raisin, dark fruit, and complexity galore. Flavor is relatively the same with just as much going on. Incredibly intense beer, and the lack of carbonation is almost forgivable, but that would only improve this apex of barley wines. Beardface (977), Eugene, Oregon, USA Apr 29, 2009 Sampled at the Toronado Barleywine Festival. Poured out an alluring dark reddish-brown with zilchenheimer for the head. Aroma is great, brandy, dark chocolate, caramel. Flavor is a little boozy but not terrible with some chocolate, licorice, brandy, oak, raisins and caramel. In other words, there’s a whole hell of a lot going on. Finish is surprisingly smooth and enjoyable, light alcohol burn. Not sure I’d risk one of these in the bottle after all I’ve heard about their quality control issues, but this sucker was sure delicious on tap. Pinball (2685), Allerød, Denmark Apr 29, 2009 tap, nørrebro bryghus tasting.
pitch dark, no head.
aroma is very boozy, old beer, toffee.
flavor is raisins, booze, much better than aroma.
i’m not much of a barley wine guy, and for me, this one is too true to style. Must admit that flavor beats aroma hands down, only the good stuff from the aroma lasts into the flavor. yespr (11613), Copenhagen O, Denmark Apr 29, 2009 From tap Nørrebro Bryghus. Pours dark Brown, unclear and with a fully gone, initially tan head. Dense roasted malt, dark chocolate and brandy barreled notes. Subdued sweet raisin note. Sweet and raisin flavoured. Dense malty and roasted caramel malt. Sweet and warming finish. Smooth and lovely. Lasting warming and fruity impression. Glouglouburp (2778), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Apr 29, 2009 Updated: Oct 15, 2009This rating for the original 2006 Release. Supposedly the only excellent bottling so far
In short: A big earthy malt orgy the American way, nothing more, nothing less. Excellent.
How: Bottle 750ml. Original bottling ). Many times at tasting sessions. This rating for an almost 2 year old bottle.
The look: Near black body topped by a tan ring of foam
In long: One of the most decadent body I have experienced this side of the Gouden Carolus brews. Thick heavy rich malts, very earthy, a lot of roasted almonds, some dates and a little porto character. Body is full, decadent but not syrupy. I didn’t pick any brandy character at all, or very little but it might just be because I knew this is brandy barrel aged. Some tobacco-ish hops partially dry out the beer and provide a light bitterness although we can’t talk about balance here. Moderate sweetness level (relative to style and abv). Soft carbonation. Alcohol is not well hidden but it does sit well with the rest of the brew. This rating was for the original 2006 bottling. I hear that the 2007 bottling develops infection overtime and the 2008 bottling has serious carbonation problems. That’s 1 out of 3 so far, that’s bad average but it could be worse. Like 3 out of 14.
