HonkeyBra (1258), Lemont, Illinois, USA Apr 28, 2009 Updated: Apr 30, 2009A murky, brownish red with some bubbles up the side. Intoxicating, woody, earthy aroma with caramel, vanilla, light apples, and tinges of alcohol. First sip is startling because of the lack of carbonation. It took me a couple sips to get used to it, but I’m ok with it. Deep caramel flavor with notes of buttery chocolate, licorice, oak, and strong brandy.Alcohol apparent in the finish. Mouthfeel is more like a spirit because of the lack of carb. I will get another bottle and rerate if it has carbonation.
RE-Rate 750 ml : This bottle had very light carbonation. Enhances the flavors definitely. Crazy beer. DrDrinkAll420 (1), California, USA does not count Apr 28, 2009 as always legends are never re created the latest release is way over rated / priced far to common to come by it is a good beer but where the hell did the carbonation go??? coldbrewky (716), Saugerties, New York, USA Apr 28, 2009 Updated: May 5, 2009Bottle (2008) via stefanje the superflously generous in trade. Pungent nose slow emerges from bottle as cork is pulled out. Still. Little if any carbonation is noticed thru the deep deep brown in the glass. The only translucense is in the top quarter inch of glass, and thats not much light. Candi sugar, caramel and chocolate malt mask a slight apple tarness. Body is big and lucious yet not overpowering. Tannins help with the lingering finish. Mouthfeel is slick but lasting. A bit dizzing after a day of work in the hop yard. Thanks for the out of left field bottle. Thanks again Stefan! Doppelganger (1353), Dry County, Arkansas, USA Apr 27, 2009 2008 vintage, 750ml bottle. Alaskanwarren picked this up and broke it out on my visit to Denver. Thanks Brian!
Thick swamp water brown with just a smattering of tan bubbles. Astounding aroma volume. A molten river of sweet old fashioned candy goodness--toffee, saltwater taffy, milk chocolate; all wrapped up in dusty old hardware store. A sip is glorious liquid silk. This must be the way my car’s engine feels when it gets a fresh gallon of 10w-30 poured in. Chocolate, caramel, dried apples, tobacco. Decadent, thick, very fine. Palate all the more perfect for being almost still. alaskanwarren (286), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Apr 26, 2009 Pours dark brown with zero head. Smells like brandy and dark chocolate. Thick syrupy bite to the nose.
Flavor is buttery smooth chocolate brandy goodness. A bit like really really really good black licorice. I’m also getting a bit of a dark chocolate godiva liquor going. Some chocolate orange vibes too. Wild!
One thing you take away from this is that this is so stinking smooth, with a warming from the alcohol too. Beer is mostly flat, by design I believe.
Wow, this is wild. Very yummy! WisconsinBeer (514), St Paul, Minnesota, USA Apr 26, 2009 Bottle. 2008 version. No head or carbonation whatsoever. First impression is holy shit this is potent. Almost like drinking a glass of brandy. Caramel vanilla malts, a hint of sugary ripe fruits, oak, brandy, alcohol. Medium bodied, finish is dry and a bit tannic, somewhat harsh on the back of the throat. This is definitely a sipper, best to split a bottle between many people. Interesting enough, but judging from the previous ratings this batch could have been so much more. Tripplebrew (486), Saint Paul, Minnesota, USA Apr 26, 2009 Pours a dark nut brown with no head. Aroma is definite alcohol and intense caramelized sugar with strong vanilla notes. Also strong bourbon like notes in the aroma. Flavor is very strong alcohol with definite notes of dried fruit, definite raisins. Strong notes of brown sugar and vanilla. Body is thick and creamy with light carbonation. A quite strong beer in flavor and alcohol. GranvilleTim (465), Granville, Illinois, USA Apr 25, 2009 Brown pour with no head or carbonation. Aroma of dark fruits, oak, vanilla. Thick beer coated my mouth with all the aromas that I noticed plus some warmth of alcohol. The flavor lasted for a long time in my mouth.
