arrogantb (694), Denver, Colorado, USA Feb 13, 2009 750ml bottle, 2007 brandy-barrel vintage courtesy of Weibull, thanks! I have been looking forward to this beer and my birthday seemed as good a day as any to pop this bottle. The color is a real nice dark-brown with red edges and a nice foam that dissolves into a smattering of off-white bubbles ringing the glass. It looks good! The aroma is very oaky, woody, and boozy with some vanilla. This sounds weird but the smell reminds me of Oaked Yeti but there is also just the hint of cognac. The flavor is pretty exceptional the moment it passes the lips. It is woody, more booze and sweet syrups abound. Wow, the flavor is also kind of hard to pin down as I am tasting different flavors with each sip, and odd gum flavor like Blackjack and candy. Perfect silky mouth-feel but the drink-ability is oddly not hampered by the ABV and the beer is boozy (in a very good way). This is a very complex tasting beer and if I was more articulate I would tell you why. Instead, all I can say is that if you like barrel-aged beers, seek this out, its tasty. The complexity of the flavor is helpful, aiding the drink-ability making you want to keep sipping and get blasted with a new taste. I had to bump the drinkability score, no problem drinking the whole bottle.

Wow this is good. Dark brown, almost black, with a light tan head. Aroma is sweet with vanilla, oak, dark fruit, roasted malt, and some alcohol. Flavor is more of the same - really complex and really, really, REALLY good. A lot like a fine port with roasted malts and all kinds of other great stuff. I couldn’t get enough of this beer. Smooth and full on the palate, but maybe a little low on carbonation. HopheadHans (753), Bay Area, California, USA Feb 9, 2009 Tap at the Toronado. Pours with an almost balck color. Aromas of coffee, chocolate and wood. Flavors are dominated by chocolate, some coffee and a definite oakiness. Very smooth but thick, slightly hot due to the alcohol, so I think that may have been a rather fresh batch. All in all a very tasty brew. daknole (2800), Plantation, Florida, USA Feb 1, 2009 2007 bottle from fordest..THANKS! Brown pour wtih a small beige head. Aroma is amazing. Vanilla, wood, caramel, toffee, booze, fruit, grahamm crackers and more! Flavor is rich and fucking delicious. Amazing notes of toffee, vanilla, oak, booze, brown sugar, maple, rich malt...damn this is amazing. WOW! Pastor (509), Maine, USA Jan 24, 2009 Thanks go out to Jw347 for this long time want a 750 ml Bottle from 07 with gold metallic lettering caged and corked 11.5% ABV. When I opened the cork a nice pop ensued. No sour in the cork aroma Yea! I was concerned after reading some threads so I chilled this one down and went for it
The bottle pored into a snifter produced a tan head for a minute the trailed of to a nice thin lace. The body was a dark I mean dark brown with burgandy highlights.
The aromas coming from my glass are incredible it really wasn’t a special occasion today but smelling this glass made it one.
It has an awesome balance of sweat malts and brandy some whiffs of alcohol come thru as well. A nice oak presence, caramel, vanilla, I could go on and on. This brew deserves to be in the top 100.
Flavor wise this follows the nose, medium in the mouth and somewhat creamy. Some of the flavors I found that weren’t mentioned above were raisins, dark fruits, and brown sugar.
This is a great sipper that will be enjoyed through the night glad I got to try it and it wasn’t infected. I must say this is defiantly my favorite American Strong Ale I have tried so far. I will defiantly seek another Angels share out for the future
JohnnyJ (1282), Carlsbad, California, USA Jan 24, 2009 On tap at O’Briens. Pours a deep brown/orange, thin tan head. Lots of carmel sweetness and vanilla, and notes of chocolate, cherries, dark fruit, and roasted malt. Some biscuits as well. Really good, but to sweet for my taste. fidel (882), Livermore, California, USA Jan 17, 2009 Updated: May 26, 2009Pours dark brown, brandy, dark fruits, chocolate, caramel, roasted malt, little tart, little alcohol. DrHomolka (722), Columbus, Ohio, USA Jan 16, 2009 750ml bottle. 2007. I drank a bottle of this about a two months ago at my wedding. I had never had it before and thought it was excellent. Was going to save this for a year or so because I thought it could stand the time and possibly improve. After reading numerous reports that this was infected/went bad I figured I better open up my second bottle in case I wasn’t so lucky. Thankfully this one is not infected.
Pours dark brown/black, certainly the darkest ’Barleywine’ I’ve ever seen. A small off-white head is small and has pour retention. A circle of bubbles and some inner swirls remain but carbonation is on the low end. Red hues around the rim are visible in front of the light but this very dark. Aroma shows chocolate, graham crackers, smore. Graham cracker sticks out the most and is probably the most intense graham cracker I’ve ever encountered in a beer. A toastiness/freshly baked bread component is also noticeable in the nose. Very interesting and unique aroma. Vanilla and oak incredibly subtle in the smell, Brandy I’m not sure is there at all. Chocolate bread is about the best I could describe this smell, though it is more appetizing than that description implies.
The flavor is fruity, a teeny bit tart, vinous, wine-like with some oakiness, and a touch of alcohol flavor and some brandy/caramel sweetness. Wood notes in there as well though they are faint. The fruit is cherry and red grape, slightly tart and interesting, could be from the brandy. Though the flavor has a sweetness to it the beer itself is not very thick or chewy, it goes down well and is certainly not cloying. A nice alcohol warmth is present and pleasant. If there were no worries of infection or anything of the like I hold by my opinion that this could age for at least another year or two. I would like to try the 06 version and the bourbon barrel version as well. From the two samples I’ve had of this vintage I am impressed.
